{"id":4564,"date":"2019-12-10T23:58:14","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T23:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4564"},"modified":"2019-12-10T23:58:14","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T23:58:14","slug":"kick-off-the-new-decade-with-indie-rock-and-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/12\/10\/kick-off-the-new-decade-with-indie-rock-and-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"Kick off the new decade with indie rock and butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has\u00a0announced Australian indie-rock legends You\u00a0am I will headline\u00a0this year\u2019s\u00a0New Year\u2019s Eve\u00a0celebration at Newcastle Foreshore.<br \/>\nNew Year\u2019s Eve\u00a02020\u00a0will feature\u00a0a record-fireworks\u00a0display\u00a0and\u00a0inclusive\u00a0activities for the\u00a0whole family\u00a0with\u00a0colourful butterfly\u00a0theming.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_1840-(1).JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Kick-off-the-new-decade-with-indie-rock-and-butter\/IMG_1840-(1).JPG.aspx\" alt=\"IMG_1840-(1).JPG\" \/>Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0said\u00a0the\u00a0foreshore will transform into an event precinct for one of the\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0favourite gatherings,\u00a0which last year attracted\u00a035,000\u00a0people.<br \/>\n\u201cWith\u00a0multi-Aria\u00a0Award winning\u00a0band\u00a0You Am I headlining this year\u2019s concert\u00a0plus\u00a0our\u00a0largest\u00a0ever fireworks display, we\u2019re expecting\u00a0locals and visitors to head to the\u00a0Foreshore in droves.<br \/>\n\u201cThe\u00a0event\u00a0will be\u00a0\u2018butterfly\u2019\u00a0themed, with colour and light\u00a0throughout the family friendly precinct\u00a0including\u00a0interactive craft activities,\u00a0art installations including a 7-metre butterfly dome and illuminated fibre optic trees sure to capture\u00a0everyone\u2019s\u00a0imagination.\u201d<br \/>\nLord\u00a0Mayor\u00a0Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0said the wide array of entertainment and\u00a0inclusive\u00a0activities\u00a0planned\u00a0to\u00a0ring\u00a0in 2020\u00a0are designed to be enjoyed by\u00a0everyone\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0community.<br \/>\n\u201c2019\u00a0has been an\u00a0incredible\u00a0year\u00a0of achievement\u00a0for Newcastle and the city deserves to celebrate all that we love about our home, and everything we&#8217;re looking forward to in 2020.\u201d<br \/>\nHeadline\u00a0act\u00a0<em>You Am I<\/em>\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0supported by\u00a0popular\u00a0local talents\u00a0<em>Jets Play Jets<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0reggae rock outfit\u00a0<em>Rum Jungle.\u00a0<\/em>UK\u00a0electronic act\u00a0<em>Antony &amp; Cleopatra\u00a0<\/em>will join the line up to provide a great range of musical entertainment\u00a0at a\u00a0free\u00a0concert at Foreshore Park.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0crescendo\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0New\u00a0Year\u2019s\u00a0Eve celebration will be the 15-minute fireworks\u00a0display, a\u00a0traditional\u00a0showstopper\u00a0over\u00a0the City\u2019s iconic\u00a0harbour.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are fortunate to have a beautiful harbour and foreshore location for our fireworks display and my favourite part of the evening is seeing the awe and wonder on children&#8217;s\u00a0faces as the spectacular colours and sparkling lights fill the sky,\u201d Cr\u00a0Carol Duncan\u00a0said.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0kids\u00a0zone features\u00a0inflatable slides and jumping castles,\u00a0while local artist Bliss Cavanagh of Happy Senses\u00a0will\u00a0create\u00a0a safe and magical sensory experience harbour side for people with disabilities and their families.<br \/>\n\u201cBack by popular demand this year\u00a0is the\u00a0sensory\u00a0zone\u00a0which provides a safe base from where registered participants can explore the whole event or simply relax and enjoy the music and fireworks,\u201d\u00a0Cr\u00a0Duncan said.<br \/>\nCity of Newcastle\u00a0is facilitating fundraising for\u00a0those affected by bushfires and drought, including at\u00a0the New Year\u2019s Eve event\u00a0by collecting cash donations for the\u00a0Red Cross.\u00a0No savings could be made from cancelling the fireworks display as contracts were signed\u00a0several months ago\u00a0and display materials have already been purchased.<br \/>\n<strong>Event information<\/strong><br \/>\nEntertainment kicks off at 5pm with festivities to conclude following the 9pm firework display.\u00a0For more information, visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au or follow the City of Newcastle on social media.<br \/>\n<strong>Entertainment:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>5.00 \u2013 5.40pm<\/strong>: RUM JUNGLE<br \/>\n<strong>6.00 \u2013 6.40pm<\/strong>: ANTONY &amp;
