{"id":4225,"date":"2019-11-14T14:47:28","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4225"},"modified":"2019-11-14T14:47:28","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:47:28","slug":"between-two-worlds-opens-at-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/11\/14\/between-two-worlds-opens-at-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"BETWEEN TWO WORLDS opens at gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">A new exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery will introduce audiences to the depth and breadth of Chinese art forms which underpin the Middle Kingdom\u2019s long relationship with Australia.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nBETWEEN TWO WORLDS<\/em>\u00a0(16 November 2019 \u2013 16 February 2020) comprises 62 works from 43 artists examining themes ranging from cultural identity, globalisation and migration.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Jian-Guo-cropped.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/BETWEEN-TWO-WORLDS-opens-at-gallery\/Jian-Guo-cropped.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Jian-Guo-cropped.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cIn the ever-changing landscape of a culturally diverse Australia, it becomes increasingly important to hear from the voices of those who live within the liminal space \u2013 the space between two or more cultures,\u201d Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe exhibition is an acknowledgement of an Australia that encompasses more than just the land between our shores.<br \/>\n\u201cIt will be a fantastic cultural offering for Novocastrians and visitors to the city over the summer months.\u201d<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pamela-See-cropped.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/BETWEEN-TWO-WORLDS-opens-at-gallery\/Pamela-See-cropped.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Pamela-See-cropped.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\"><em>BETWEEN TWO WORLDS<\/em>\u00a0acknowledges artists who have lived, worked in, and are connected to both, China and Australia through migration, major historical events and Australia\u2019s agricultural and industrial developments.<br \/>\nIt engages four generations of artists including descendants of indentured labourers from Canton\/Guangdong, recent arrivals from Hong Kong, refugees who fled China during the Second World War and those who are still in the process of reclaiming their Chinese heritage.<br \/>\nShowcasing the work of generations of Chinese-Australian artists, the exhibition also features works of art by Aboriginal artists who are exploring their own Chinese heritage.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nBETWEEN TWO WORLDS<\/em>\u00a0incorporates installation, paintings, photography, sculptures and video, including works of art from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection, the National Portrait Gallery and other public and private lenders from around Australia.<br \/>\nFive works from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection will be included in the display, including new acquisitions from contemporary artist Owen Leong.<br \/>\n\u201cDrawing on the rich resource that is our collection is of primary importance to our local community,\u201d Lauretta Morton added.<br \/>\n\u201cTo present\u00a0<em>BETWEEN TWO WORLDS<\/em>, the Gallery has worked together with Newcastle-based guest curator Catherine Croll, who is internationally recognised for her diverse work promoting cultural awareness and bilateral cultural exchange.\u201d<br \/>\nA range of public programs in development will support the exhibition \u2013 including\u00a0<strong>Chinese New Year festivities on Saturday 25 January 2020.<\/strong>\u00a0All details of event programming before the close of 2019 are available on the Gallery website, with more specifics about the Gallery\u2019s Chinese New Year festivities available on request.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nag.org.au\/Whats-On\/Event-Calendar\"><u>https:\/\/nag.org.au\/Whats-On\/Event-Calendar<\/u><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>2019 programming\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opening Weekend Panel Discussion<\/strong><br \/>\nSaturday 16 November 2019, 2pm<br \/>\nFree event, no bookings required<br \/>\nJoin guest curator Catherine Croll for a panel discussion that introduces the exhibition\u2019s themes.
