{"id":4210,"date":"2019-11-13T16:14:24","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T16:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4210"},"modified":"2019-11-13T16:14:24","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T16:14:24","slug":"city-of-newcastle-recognises-climate-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/11\/13\/city-of-newcastle-recognises-climate-emergency\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Newcastle recognises climate emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle recognised in a council resolution of 28 May 2019 that there is a global climate emergency and urgent need for real\u00a0action on climate change.<br \/>\nIt reaffirmed a commitment to a just economic transition for coal mining communities, including support for investment in hydrogen as an export energy, construction of large-scale renewables and pumped hydro, and manufacturing of electric vehicles.<br \/>\nEnvironmental activists are encouraged by the City to consider the broader impact of their actions, and work towards consensus across the political spectrum, under the same resolution of Council.<br \/>\nMore than 1,180 jurisdictions and local governments in 23 countries have also declared a climate emergency, according to the International Climate Emergency Forum (ICEF).<br \/>\nAs part of the City\u2019s actions, 100 per cent of our electricity will come from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-awards-100-per-cent-renewable-contract\">renewable sources<\/a>\u00a0from January 1 2020, when we will become the first local government in NSW to do so.<br \/>\nThe Climate Emergency Declaration campaign in Australia is backed by more than 50 climate action groups, including the ICEF and Greenpeace Australia.<br \/>\nTaking further action, we\u2019re improving the energy efficiency of our buildings, replacing our street lights with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/LEDs-to-light-up-residential-streets\">energy-saving LEDS<\/a>\u00a0and finishing construction on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Solar-eclipses-coal-at-Council-waste-centre\">five-megawatt solar farm<\/a>\u00a0on a former landfill site after securing a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/CEFC-finance-to-build-Newcastle-s-solar-farm\">$6.5 million loan from Australia\u2019s Clean Energy Finance Corporation in 2018<\/a>.<br \/>\nAs our single largest investment in a renewable project, it follows eight other solar installations at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/City-Works-Depot-Solar-Electricity\">our Waratah Works Depot<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/Newcastle-Art-Gallery-Solar-Electricity\">Art Gallery<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/Newcastle-Art-Gallery-Solar-Electricity\">,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/City-Library-Solar-Electricity\">City,\u00a0<\/a>Wallsend and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/New-Lambton-Library\">New Lambton libraries,\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/No-1-Sportsground\">No.1<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Living\/Environment\/Energy-Resource-Management\/Council-building-upgrades\/No-2-Sportsground\">No.2 Sportsgrounds<\/a>\u00a0and Newcastle Museum.<br \/>\nThe solar farm at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre builds on one of Australia&#8217;s most advanced renewable energy setups at a waste facility &#8211; with a 2.2megawatt landfill gas generator and a small wind turbine also located onsite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle recognised in a council resolution of 28 May 2019 that there is a global climate emergency and urgent need for real\u00a0action on climate change.
