{"id":4173,"date":"2019-11-09T04:28:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-09T04:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=4173"},"modified":"2019-11-09T04:28:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-09T04:28:40","slug":"wa-gas-industry-is-a-colossal-national-climate-bomb-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/11\/09\/wa-gas-industry-is-a-colossal-national-climate-bomb-greens\/","title":{"rendered":"WA gas industry is a colossal, national climate bomb: Greens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Government\u2019s push for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a low-emissions fossil fuel has been exposed with a new report finding no evidence LNG \u00a0is any \u2018cleaner\u2019 than coal.<br \/>\nThe Conservation Council of Western Australia\u2019s\u00a0<em>Clean State<\/em>\u00a0report states an international review of LNG infrastructure found the threat to the climate from LNG is \u2018as large or larger than coal\u2019 when levels of methane emissions are included.<br \/>\nGreens co-deputy leader and spokesperson on mining and resources, Senator Larissa Waters, said the expansion of the West Australian LNG industry was a massive climate bomb and the primary driver of recent national emissions growth.<br \/>\n\u201cLNG is as much a \u2018clean gas\u2019 as tobacco is a \u2018health product\u2019, and the tactics of denial, influence and misinformation are disturbingly similar,\u201d she said today.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Coalition is out spruiking LNG as a \u2018clean gas\u2019 when the evidence shows WA LNG facilities pump out more carbon pollution than the state\u2019s oldest coal-fired power stations.<br \/>\n\u201cThe report released today tells us emissions from WA\u2019s gas infrastructure have become Australia\u2019s fastest-growing pollution source and places our Paris Agreement commitments at risk.<br \/>\n\u201cIt comes the days\u00a0after an unprecedented statement from 11,000 scientists warning of \u201cuntold suffering due to the climate crisis\u201d if the world does not take action including leaving fossil fuels in the ground.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Greens have also backed communities concerned about the risk from the gas industry with a bill since 2011 to allow landholders to say no to gas and to ban fracking.<br \/>\n\u201cDespite the appalling lack of planning for the climate emergency, Australia is in the fortunate position of having abundant, low-cost renewable energy resources ready to power our economy and society.<br \/>\n\u201cNew large-scale renewable infrastructure is now ready to displace both coal and gas. Our economy is in the doldrums and nation-building projects in renewable energy can deliver the rapid de-carbonisation needed while creating new jobs, boosting regional economies and investing in coal-affected communities.<br \/>\n\u201cPolitical donations are the major brake on a cleaner, renewable-powered future for Australia.
