{"id":41352,"date":"2026-10-29T17:52:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T06:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=41352"},"modified":"2026-10-29T17:52:01","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T06:52:01","slug":"razor-gang-once-again-comes-for-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/10\/29\/razor-gang-once-again-comes-for-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"Razor gang once again comes for researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the eve of an appearance at Senate Estimates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/story\/9381843\/csiro-to-axe-dozens-of-scientists-in-latest-restructure\/\">the CSIRO has told staff<\/a> it plans to cut 100 jobs across its biosecurity and technology research units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These cuts will further undermine Australia\u2019s sovereign science capabilities, damage staff morale, and add to a mounting redundancy bill which could have been spent on researchers\u2019 wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Greens spokesperson for Science, Senator Vanessa Bleyer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt seems the razor gang at CSIRO was not content with cutting climate science jobs in the middle of a climate crisis, and now they are back for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the same time as research roles are being cut from the biosecurity unit, its remit is broadening to include plant, animal and environmental health alongside human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSurely this would require more researchers, not fewer, particularly as we need to adapt to emerging threats like H5 bird flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an organisation which has the money to pay its top executive more than $1 million a year, but won\u2019t expand its staff headcount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAustralia\u2019s sovereign scientific capabilities must be maintained, and this ongoing campaign of cuts undermines them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the eve of an appearance at Senate Estimates, the CSIRO has told staff it plans to cut 100 jobs across its biosecurity and technology research units.
