{"id":413,"date":"2018-11-08T02:33:04","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T02:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=413"},"modified":"2018-11-08T02:33:04","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T02:33:04","slug":"an-antarctic-silk-and-plankton-sandwich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/08\/an-antarctic-silk-and-plankton-sandwich\/","title":{"rendered":"An Antarctic silk-and-plankton sandwich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#8217;s icebreaker RSV\u00a0<em>Aurora Australis<\/em>\u00a0is steaming south to Antarctica and over the last week has been towing an ingenious plankton sampling device.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) traps plankton swimming in the ocean\u00a0between moving sheets of silk.<br \/>\nThe silk-and-plankton sandwich is wound up in a removable cassette, driven by the passing water turning a propeller, at a constant rate of 1cm for each nautical mile travelled.<br \/>\nEach tow lasts about 450 nautical miles, and also records ocean and climate data at the same time.<\/p>\n<div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/data.aad.gov.au\/aadc\/cpr\/\">CPR surveys<\/a>\u00a0have been run by the Australian Antarctic Program in the Southern Ocean since 1991, involving ships from several nations.<br \/>\nA staggering amount of data has been amassed &#8211; around 47,000 samples analysed from more than 1000 CPR tows for a total of approximately 240,000 nautical miles.<br \/>\nThis long-term monitoring (supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scar.org\/\">Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research<\/a>) is crucial to map the shifting patterns of plankton biodiversity in the Southern Ocean, and provide early warning signs of its changing health.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#8217;s icebreaker RSV\u00a0Aurora Australis\u00a0is steaming south to Antarctica and over the last week has been towing an ingenious plankton sampling device.
