{"id":40594,"date":"2026-08-27T19:19:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T09:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=40594"},"modified":"2026-08-27T19:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T09:19:12","slug":"minns-labor-government-to-continue-police-drone-program-trial-to-make-regional-communities-safer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/08\/27\/minns-labor-government-to-continue-police-drone-program-trial-to-make-regional-communities-safer\/","title":{"rendered":"Minns Labor Government to continue police drone program trial to make regional communities safer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Minns Labor Government will continue the Australian-first police drone trial in Moree for another two years and will look to roll out the technology in other regional areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drones are part of the Government\u2019s ongoing efforts to ensure NSW Police have world-class, modern technology to help keep regional communities safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two drones have been operating in Moree this year giving officers another tool to respond to and prevent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as POLAIR Remote, the drones are remotely piloted from a \u2018Remote Operations Centre at the NSW Police Force Aviation Command at Bankstown Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police can reach anywhere in town within minutes of launch, improving police response times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the first time drone technology has been used in this way in Australian policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An evaluation of the Australia-first trial in Moree is currently underway, with the evaluation looking at the operational effectiveness of the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A community survey of 516 people was also undertaken to consider community confidence in the trial, which found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>85% report no perceived negative impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>83% believed the drones enhance public safety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>82% were either positive or very positive about the drone use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78% of respondents believed the drones improved emergency response times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>76% said they had very high or high trust in police use of drones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75% feel safer or much safer as a result of the drone presence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further consultation, including with Aboriginal stakeholders, will be undertaken as part of the expansion of the drone program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Moree drone program is part of the Minns Labor Government\u2019s long-term place-based response plan to address youth crime and improve community safety across regional New South Wales, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Investing $13.4 million for a targeted place-based response in Moree<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investing $23 million to address youth crime and improve community safety in regional NSW<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investing $6.3 million to provide intensive bail supervision and support for young people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing $5.5 million for youth diversion and violence reduction programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating a new \u2018Post and Boast\u2019 offence for offenders who record their crimes for social media notoriety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Securing a historic payrise for officers and paying police recruits to train to boost frontline numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about the NSW Government\u2019s investment via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsw.gov.au\/departments-and-agencies\/premiers-department\/community-engagement\/nswgovernment-place-based-responses\/moree-placed-based-response\">Moree place-based response<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re extending this Australian-first trial in Moree for another two years because we want to give police every tool we can to keep regional communities safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese drones can be anywhere across Moree within two or three minutes, giving police on the ground eyes in the sky and critical information about what they\u2019re responding to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no single answer to regional crime, but we\u2019ll keep investing in police, prevention and new technology that can help make communities safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is smart policing at its best. Police and the local community have told us the drone program is a real game changer, so we\u2019re extending it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis technology is changing the way police fight crime and it\u2019s happening because the Minns Labor Government is giving police the tools they need to keep our communities safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cModern policing happens in the community, in the sky, on the road and at the scene not behind a desk.
