{"id":39878,"date":"2026-07-12T14:40:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=39878"},"modified":"2026-07-12T14:40:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:40:44","slug":"building-stronger-cultural-ties-between-australia-and-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/07\/12\/building-stronger-cultural-ties-between-australia-and-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Building stronger cultural ties between Australia and India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian Government is deepening cultural cooperation with India, building on our strong relationship and people-to-people links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Albanese has welcomed progress to repatriate an Australian First Nations ancestor held in the Government Museum of Chennai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancestor will be voluntarily and unconditionally repatriated by India to their Traditional Custodians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repatriation of ancestors to their Traditional Custodians is a priority for First Nations people and&nbsp;represents&nbsp;some of the most important and respectful work governments can undertake.&nbsp;India\u2019s agreement to repatriate reflects the strong cultural relationship and mutual respect between our two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also announced the voluntary return of several items of cultural significance to India previously held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The voluntary returns demonstrate Australia\u2019s ongoing commitment to being an international leader in the ethical collection of cultural material and best-practice collection management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAustralia and India share a deep history, and we are building strong people-to-people links between our two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe repatriation of First Nations ancestors promotes healing, justice and reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI commend Prime Minister Modi for the decision to repatriate Australian First Nations ancestors to their Traditional Custodians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minister for the Arts Tony Burke<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe repatriation of ancestors and the voluntary return of items of cultural significance are both examples of the values shared between Australia and India.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery repatriation of ancestors from overseas is an act of truth-telling and righting wrongs of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI welcome India\u2019s repatriation efforts, as we continue to work to return First Nations ancestors to their Country and their people.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Government is deepening cultural cooperation with India, building on our strong relationship and people-to-people links.
