{"id":39784,"date":"2026-07-04T20:26:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=39784"},"modified":"2026-07-04T20:26:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:26:15","slug":"now-is-the-time-18-billion-gas-war-windfall-confirms-the-case-for-a-gas-export-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/07\/04\/now-is-the-time-18-billion-gas-war-windfall-confirms-the-case-for-a-gas-export-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Now is the time: $18 billion gas war windfall confirms the case for a gas export tax"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greens say new analysis showing Australian gas corporations are expected to receive an additional&nbsp;<strong>$18 billion windfall<\/strong>&nbsp;over the next year reinforces what has become increasingly clear: global conflict is delivering extraordinary profits to multinational gas companies while Labor continues to refuse to make them pay their fair share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The USA and Israel\u2019s war on Iran, and instability around the Strait of Hormuz, has sent global gas prices soaring, strengthening the case for a minimum&nbsp;<strong>25 per cent gas export tax<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Greens\u2019 resources spokesperson, Senator Steph Hodgins-May:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis confirms what many suspected: multinational gas corporations are set to make enormous windfall profits from a global conflict, while Australians continue to be ripped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese war-driven windfall profits are about to arrive, and Labor is still refusing to make the gas giants pay what they owe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMultinational gas corporations are set to pocket an extra $18 billion from Australian gas exports off the back of Trump\u2019s bloody war on Iran, while Australians continue to be ripped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAustralians did not ask for this illegal war. But if the government had the courage to stand up to the gas lobby and introduced a 25 per cent gas export tax in May\u2019s Budget, billions of dollars from this windfall could be flowing back into lower energy bills, stronger public services and real cost-of-living relief instead of into offshore profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead, these extraordinary profits will largely flow offshore while Australians get short-changed from the resources they own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery day Labor delays is another day multinational gas corporations make blood-soaked profits from resources Australians own, while families are told there\u2019s no money for the services they rely on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe momentum for a gas export tax is only growing. It\u2019s not going away.
