{"id":39780,"date":"2026-07-04T20:24:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=39780"},"modified":"2026-07-04T20:24:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:24:43","slug":"newcastle-museum-tugs-on-the-heartstrings-with-launch-of-new-exhibitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/07\/04\/newcastle-museum-tugs-on-the-heartstrings-with-launch-of-new-exhibitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle Museum tugs on the heartstrings with launch of new exhibitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone\u2019s favourite man from the moon touched down at Newcastle Museum today as part of a new exhibition filled with creativity, nostalgia and \u2018lots of fun for everyone\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newcastle is the first stop on a national tour for<em>&nbsp;Mr Squiggle and Friends: The Creative World of Norman Hetherington<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getmedia\/79a7d959-1c68-4242-8594-0733011392ad\/Mr-Squiggle-and-friends-2-web.jpg\" alt=\"Mr Squiggle and Friends exhibition\"><em>Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris, City of Newcastle Head of Exhibitions &amp; Cultural Collections David Hampton, National Museum of Australia curator Nicole McLennan and Mr Squiggle&#8217;s last on-air companion Rebecca Hetherington take a sneak peek at the Mr Squiggle and Friends exhibition as it is being installed at Newcastle Museum.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Museum of Australia exhibition celebrates the man behind one of the most-loved children\u2019s characters on Australian television, and his legacy as a wartime entertainer, cartoonist, artist, performer and puppeteer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Squiggle captivated and inspired generations of children to draw, with his distinctive pencil for a nose, charming banter and ability to turn a simple squiggle into a masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hetherington\u2019s work also inspired the career of Newcastle-born entertainer and puppeteer Murray Raine, who donated around 20 of his own marionettes to Newcastle Museum last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A selection of these is being presented in a separate exhibition,&nbsp;<em>Murray Raine\u2019s Marvellous Marionettes,<\/em>&nbsp;to coincide with the Mr Squiggle show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">City of Newcastle\u2019s Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries and Learning, Julie Baird, said the exhibitions provide insights into creativity to inspire young and old alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese exhibitions are exciting for Newcastle Museum as they are not just about nostalgic memories, they\u2019re about joy and empowering visitors to explore their own creativity without judgement,\u201d Ms Baird said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr Squiggle tells people that they can, and that spirit was what Norman Hetherington, Mr. Squiggle&#8217;s creator, passed on to Murray Raine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTogether, the exhibitions highlight Newcastle\u2019s connection to broader Australian stories, from Murray Raine\u2019s early inspirations in Newcastle, to his collaboration with Norman Hetherington and performances on a global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey trace the origins and careers of two of Australia\u2019s great puppeteers and invite visitors to get up close to the characters they brought to life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mr Squiggle and Friends<\/em>&nbsp;explores Hetherington\u2019s whimsy, humour and talent. It takes visitors behind the scenes to experience hand-crafted puppets as well as wartime artworks and colourful stage props.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getmedia\/b22be834-ace6-451f-b357-2b344bb3baef\/Norman-Hetherington-s-creative-creationseb.jpg\" alt=\"Norman Hetherington's creations\">Norman Hetherington&#8217;s creativity on display at Newcastle Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors of all ages can explore their own creativity via an interactive \u2018squiggle\u2019 drawing experience within the exhibition, while Newcastle Museum will also host a series of hands-on workshops inspired by Mr Squiggle throughout the July school holidays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National Museum of Australia Director Katherine McMahon said the show provides the opportunity for parents and grandparents who grew up with Mr Squiggle to introduce the next generation to this adored TV character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho can forget the man from the moon, aka Mr Squiggle, who entertained us with his&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;upside-down sketches?\u201d Ms McMahon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow he and his friends, Blackboard, Rocket, Bill Steamshovel and Gus the Snail, are back to&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;star in this new show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are thrilled to be sharing this delightful part of Australia\u2019s television history with the rest&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mr Squiggle and Friends<\/em>&nbsp;was a family affair on ABC TV. While Norman voiced and made all the characters, his wife, Margaret, eventually took over scriptwriting, and his daughter, Rebecca, was Mr Squiggle\u2019s last on-screen companion (1989\u201399). Puppeteering remains a family tradition as Norman&#8217;s grandson, Tom has followed in his footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy father was incessantly creative. He never stopped thinking about what he could do to entertain people,\u201d Ms Hetherington said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was wildly imaginative but always with a deep sense of purpose and direction.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getmedia\/10d55d3f-88fa-41c7-9b5f-8a35fcd511df\/Murray-Raine-exhibition-web.jpg\" alt=\"Murray Raine exhibition\">Newcastle&#8217;s Murray Raine was inspired from a young age and went on to become one of Australia&#8217;s leading puppeteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entertainment and imagination are also at the heart of Murray Raine\u2019s career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired at the age of six by a puppet show he saw at Waratah Infants School, Raine later became one of Australia\u2019s youngest professionally paid puppeteers and went on to have a successful career in Australia and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was mentored by Norman Hetherington and collaborated with him on a number of puppets, with the pair developing a lifelong friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Norman and I had a similar outlook to building and performing puppets. We had a simple rule: make it fun,\u201d Raine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe exhibition captures the fun of puppetry.
