{"id":39756,"date":"2026-07-04T20:15:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=39756"},"modified":"2026-07-04T20:15:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:15:44","slug":"first-airport-metro-train-touches-down-in-western-sydney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/07\/04\/first-airport-metro-train-touches-down-in-western-sydney\/","title":{"rendered":"First airport metro train touches down in Western Sydney"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first of 12 trains for the Sydney Metro \u2013 Western Sydney Airport Line has arrived in Sydney, marking an important step towards first services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next-generation, three-carriage train travelled 23,000 kilometres from Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was unloaded in Port Kembla on Monday and was trucked to Sydney Metro\u2019s new Stabling and Maintenance Facility at Orchard Hills, where the train was assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design features of the new trains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wide, accessible aisles through the centre of the train \u2013 approximately 30 centimetres wider than those on M1 Line trains &#8211; to allow for ease of movement for passengers travelling with luggage;\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Room for luggage storage below seats;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High resolution displays showing real-time flight information via a direct feed from the airport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple seating choices in each carriage, including front and rear facing seating for groups, plus traditional longitudinal (sideways) seating;\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designated wheelchair spaces and accessible areas;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing loops in all carriages for enhanced accessibility and\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four bicycle storage spaces on every train.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining 11 trains are due to arrive over the coming months, with dynamic testing on the 23km, six-stop line expected to commence later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The journey time from St Marys metro station to Airport Terminal Station will be around 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s great to see Metro trains arriving, which will serve Western Sydney\u2019s new international airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith room for bags and flight information, these will be among the most advanced trains the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s delivery gets us a step closer to connecting another Australian airport with a rail link \u2013 Melbourne via Sunshine next!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NSW Minister for Transport John Graham<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWestern Sydney is getting the most technologically-advanced driverless trains in the world to service the new international airport and that growing part of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are excited to the see first train unloading at the docks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese trains will be unique to the Western Sydney Airport Metro line, providing wider aisles for travellers with luggage, digital screens showing real-time flight information and all modern accessibility features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlatforms and gates at the new airport station will be wider to make it a first-class experience when services begin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Federal Member for Werriwa Anne Stanley:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe future of commuting in Western Sydney has arrived. These new metro trains will complement bus routes that will start criss-crossing the south west and connecting people to the airport from July.
