{"id":3966,"date":"2019-10-22T04:14:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T04:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3966"},"modified":"2019-10-22T04:14:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T04:14:22","slug":"back-to-basics-students-to-focus-on-maths-english-and-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/10\/22\/back-to-basics-students-to-focus-on-maths-english-and-science\/","title":{"rendered":"BACK TO BASICS: STUDENTS TO FOCUS ON MATHS, ENGLISH AND SCIENCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW school curriculum is set for its first major shakeup in over a generation, with a renewed focus on maths, English and science, following the release of the interim curriculum review today.<br \/>\nPremier Gladys Berejiklian welcomed the interim curriculum review and said the report\u2019s emphasis on fundamentals aligns with the Government\u2019s commitment to equip young people with the tools they need to thrive in life after school.<br \/>\n\u201cThe NSW Government strongly supports a back to basics approach,\u201d Ms Berejiklian said.<br \/>\n\u201cStudents need to have strong foundations in maths, English and science to be prepared for the jobs of the future and for attaining lifelong skills.\u201d<br \/>\nEducation Minister Sarah Mitchell said the draft curriculum review has indicated \u2018significant change\u2019 is required to the NSW curriculum.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is the first review of the curriculum to be done in 30 years. It\u2019s a great opportunity for us to reflect on the future of education in NSW and make changes to meet the needs of today\u2019s society,\u201d Ms Mitchell said.<br \/>\n\u201cStudents need to be equipped with strong literacy and numeracy foundations to succeed in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Century. We want a curriculum that leaves no student behind while stimulating students who are advancing faster than others.\u201d<br \/>\nIn 2018, the NSW Government commissioned Professor Geoff Masters to review the entire school curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.<br \/>\nParents, teachers, students and the public can have a say on the Interim Curriculum Review via the NSW\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nswcurriculumreview.nesa.nsw.edu.au\/\">Curriculum Review website.<\/a>\u00a0Consultation closes on 13 December 2019.<br \/>\nThe interim report\u2019s key review areas are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reducing the amount of content in the curriculum so students have time to build in depth subject knowledge and develop the skills needed to apply knowledge in the real world;<\/li>\n<li>Flexible progression that uses levels of attainment to organise syllabuses so students are recognised and challenged according to where they are on the continuum of learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW school curriculum is set for its first major shakeup in over a generation, with a renewed focus on maths, English and science, following the release of the interim curriculum review today.
