{"id":3871,"date":"2019-10-14T11:40:26","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T11:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3871"},"modified":"2019-10-14T11:40:26","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T11:40:26","slug":"national-carers-week-a-helping-hand-for-those-who-help-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/10\/14\/national-carers-week-a-helping-hand-for-those-who-help-others\/","title":{"rendered":"NATIONAL CARERS WEEK: A HELPING HAND FOR THOSE WHO HELP OTHERS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW Government is urging the state\u2019s almost one million carers to have their say on a new 10-year strategy that aims to better support them.<br \/>\nMinister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said the call to action comes as National Carers Week kicks off, which recognises the valuable contribution of carers across the country.<br \/>\n\u201cCarers provide about 1.9 billion hours of essential care to loved ones across Australia each year,\u201d Mr Ward said.<br \/>\n\u201cOur Government is committed supporting that valuable work and wants to hear what\u2019s working and what isn\u2019t, so we can better support and care for NSW carers.\u201d<br \/>\nCarers provide unpaid help to someone who needs support due to disability, mental illness, dementia, frail age or chronic illness.<br \/>\nBusinesses play a major role in supporting carers in the workplace through the Carers + Employers program, which assists employers with how to accommodate staff who have caring responsibilities.<br \/>\n\u201cOne in eight employees is an unpaid carer, which is a much larger cohort in our community than people might think\u201d Mr Ward said.<br \/>\n\u201cFlexible, carer-friendly workplaces help staff balance the caring responsibilities with paid employment and that\u2019s absolutely critical to ensure long-term support.<br \/>\n\u201cThe University of Technology and the Department of Communities and Justice are leading the way and have gained accreditation under this new program.\u201d<br \/>\nThe NSW Government is investing $4.9 million in 2019-20 to support carers.
