{"id":380,"date":"2018-11-07T05:18:35","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T05:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=380"},"modified":"2018-11-07T05:18:35","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T05:18:35","slug":"drama-report-2017-18-record-expenditure-on-australian-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2018\/11\/07\/drama-report-2017-18-record-expenditure-on-australian-titles\/","title":{"rendered":"DRAMA REPORT 2017\/18: RECORD EXPENDITURE ON AUSTRALIAN TITLES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/getmedia\/39b2740d-f16a-41ec-88f5-9312a96fd7d8\/181030-Mystery-Road-Ladies-in-Black-Homecoming-Queens.JPG?width=1200&amp;height=800&amp;ext=.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" \/><br \/>\n<small><em>Mystery Road<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ladies in Black<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Homecoming Queens<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Screen Australia\u2019s annual Drama Report released today shows a record high expenditure on home grown stories, with $718 million spent on local productions, up 7% on last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Drama Report measures the health of the Australian screen industry by covering the production of local and foreign feature films, TV dramas, online programs plus PDV (post, digital and visual effects) activity.<br \/>\nThe 2017\/18 record local expenditure included 36 TV dramas such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/mystery-road-tv-series-2018\/36207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mystery Road<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/playing-for-keeps-2018\/36724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Playing for Keeps<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and the forthcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/lambs-of-god-2018\/36350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lambs of God<\/em><\/a>, and their combined spend of $295 million was above the five-year average. Spend on Australian feature films was up 12% on last year to $321 million due to strong Official Co-production activity. 38 Australian feature films were made including box office hit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/Ladies-in-Black-2018\/35635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ladies in Black<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and the forthcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/Storm-Boy-2019\/35536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Storm Boy<\/em><\/a>. 10 children\u2019s television programs went into production including fan favourite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenaustralia.gov.au\/the-screen-guide\/t\/Bluey-2019\/36100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bluey<\/em><\/a>, with $49 million spent on Australian children\u2019s programs, up 3% on last year\u2019s spend but below the five-year average. 18 online drama titles went into production, with a 256% increase in expenditure, driven by content with longer episodes and a higher cost per hour.<br \/>\nOverall $814 million was spent on 133 screen productions in 2017\/18 compared to $1.3 billion on 166 titles in 2016\/17. This drop was largely due to reduced foreign film production spend.
