{"id":3798,"date":"2019-10-03T23:21:36","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T23:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3798"},"modified":"2019-10-03T23:21:36","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T23:21:36","slug":"delay-of-endangered-sea-lion-listing-could-determine-its-survival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/10\/03\/delay-of-endangered-sea-lion-listing-could-determine-its-survival\/","title":{"rendered":"Delay of endangered Sea Lion listing could determine its survival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Environment Minister has again delayed the assessment of flora and fauna species\u2019 threat status in a move that could determine the survival of these species, including the Australian Sea Lion, the Greens say.<br \/>\nThe Environment Department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.gov.au\/biodiversity\/threatened\/nominations\/extensions\">website<\/a>\u00a0was quietly updated this week to show Minister Sussan Ley has granted extensions to 36 species currently being assessed for listing under the EPBC Act.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is an extremely critical time for the Sea Lion which is facing the enormous threat posed by Equinor which plans to drill for oil in its habitat, the Great Australian Bight,\u201d Greens Spokesperson for the Environment and Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young said.<br \/>\n\u201cEquinor\u2019s Environmental Plan is currently before NOPSEMA for assessment and the regulator is required to consider the presence of listed species in the proposed drilling site.<br \/>\n\u201cA listing change for the Sea Lion from \u2018Vulnerable\u2019 to \u2018Endangered\u2019 could significantly affect the assessment so the fact the Minister has deferred it again is very concerning.<br \/>\n\u201cI think a lot of people will be asking whether this is a move designed to limit the emphasis placed on the Sea Lion while this proposal from Big Oil is being considered.\u201d<br \/>\nSenator Hanson-Young said when a species is listed under the EPBC Act a \u2018Recovery Plan\u2019, or at the very least \u2018Conservation Advice\u2019, will be provided which could make all the difference to that species\u2019 survival.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are in the middle of an extinction crisis and yet once again we have an Environment Minister failing to ensure the protection of threatened species,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cIf a species isn\u2019t listed at all under the EPBC Act then it won\u2019t even be referred to in an environmental assessment for a project like a new coal mine or oil and gas exploration &#8211; how convenient for the Liberal Party\u2019s political donors in the fossil fuel industry.<br \/>\n\u201cMinister Ley has some explaining to do because the future of our threatened flora and fauna is in her hands.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Environment Minister has again delayed the assessment of flora and fauna species\u2019 threat status in a move that could determine the survival of these species, including the Australian Sea Lion, the Greens say.
