{"id":37291,"date":"2026-02-07T17:05:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T06:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=37291"},"modified":"2026-02-07T17:05:42","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T06:05:42","slug":"labors-failure-to-consult-and-protect-civil-liberties-sees-surveilance-devices-bill-defeated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/02\/07\/labors-failure-to-consult-and-protect-civil-liberties-sees-surveilance-devices-bill-defeated\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor\u2019s failure to consult and protect civil liberties sees surveilance devices bill defeated"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last night, the NSW Liberals and Nationals helped defeat the Minns Labor Government\u2019s Surveillance Devices and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025 in the Legislative Council after Labor refused to engage with reasonable amendments.<br>\u00a0<br>The Bill sought to significantly expand the ability of law enforcement agencies to receive and use recordings that were obtained illegally by third parties without prior judicial approval, undermining long-standing privacy protections and judicial oversight.<br>\u00a0<br>In a rare defeat for the Government in the Parliament, MPs from across the political spectrum united to defeat the Bill for a range of reasons.<br>\u00a0<br>However, the Minns Labor Government\u2019s failure to consult or consider reasonable amendments before seeking to expand law enforcement powers was critical to the Bill\u2019s failure.
