{"id":37247,"date":"2026-02-05T14:30:49","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T03:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=37247"},"modified":"2026-02-05T14:30:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T03:30:49","slug":"delivering-the-future-defence-estate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/02\/05\/delivering-the-future-defence-estate\/","title":{"rendered":"Delivering the Future Defence Estate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Albanese Government is undertaking the most significant reform to the Defence estate ever to ensure it is fit\u2011for\u2011purpose \u2013 providing the ADF with the facilities and capabilities it needs to keep Australians safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Albanese Government has released a public version of the Defence Estate Audit and the Government\u2019s response to it \u2013 agreeing or agreeing-in-principle to all 20 of the Audit\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned following the 2023 Defence Strategic Review, Ms Jan Mason and Mr Jim Miller led an independent process to assess whether the estate is<em>&nbsp;<\/em>fit\u2011for\u2011purpose and provides the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with the facilities and capabilities it needs to keep Australians safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key areas of focus for the Audit included strengthening the resilience of the Defence estate, mechanisms to accelerate delivery of major infrastructure, and options for consolidation of underutilised facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Defence Estate Audit found:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDefence is constrained by the weight of its past when it comes to management of the estate.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cToday\u2019s estate footprint comprises numerous legacy sites without a clear ongoing link to current or future capabilities.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cUrgent interventions are needed to correct the unsustainable trajectory that has resulted from decades of deferred decisions on contentious estate issues.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a>The Audit\u2019s&nbsp;20 recommendations aim to transition the estate toward a more modern, future\u2011focused and fit-for-purpose capability that best enables the ADF in its tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Audit\u2019s first recommendation, which the Government has agreed to, calls for Defence to \u201c<em>reduce its property holdings through focussed divestment of sites at market value in areas not aligned with current or future capability priorities\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government received the Audit at the end of 2023 and has since taken the necessary and appropriate time to assess&nbsp;potential impacts on personnel, capability and broader community groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 68 sites were identified for divestment by the Audit. Following assessment, the Government has agreed to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wholly divest<\/strong>\u00a064 sites, three of which have been divested since the Audit\u2019s commissioning: Magnetic Island (QLD), Haberfield Training Depot (NSW) and Garbutt (QLD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Partially divest<\/strong>\u00a0three sites: HMAS Penguin (NSW), RAAF Williams \u2013 Laverton (VIC) and Warradale Barracks (SA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retain in full<\/strong>\u00a0one site: Pittwater Annex (NSW)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the sites are historically significant and have important meaning to current and former Defence personnel. The Albanese Government is committed to preserving and enhancing public access to historically significant sites and collections so that all Australians can celebrate our proud military history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the divestment process, the Department of Finance will manage the new divestments arising from the Defence Estate Audit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finance is leading this process due to its experience in managing large-scale divestment programs, expertise in divestment and remediation, and oversight of the Commonwealth Property Disposal Policy and other land policy and legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All proceeds from divestments under this process will be retained within the Defence portfolio and be reinvested in National Defence Strategy priorities, including continuing to upgrade and strengthen our northern bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Albanese Government thanks Ms Jan Mason and Mr Jim Miller for their diligent, focused Audit, drawing on their experience in estate management, infrastructure development and financial governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Albanese Government is committed to ensuring the Australian Defence Force has the facilities and capabilities it needs to keep Australians safe.
