McPherson has won $5,000 in recognition of the popularity of his work.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Joshua McPherson in front of his work at the Kilgour Prize 2019 Artists Preview event, August 2019.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/%E2%80%98Hardworking-man%E2%80%99s-softer,-gentler-side%E2%80%99-wins-Kilg\/Kilgour2.JPG.aspx\" alt=\"Kilgour2.JPG\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cWe had arranged our painting sessions to begin and unfortunately day one happened to fall on the day he lost his precious Blue Heeler,\u201d explains artist Joshua McPherson.<br \/>\n\u201cWe decided to continue with our session, and I endeavoured to capture Pete&#8217;s feeling and emotions that day as it shows this tough, hardworking man\u2019s softer, gentler side,\u201d McPherson said.<br \/>\nNewcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton reinforced the merit of the public&#8217;s decision, \u201cMcPherson has captured the inner and outer qualities of his sitter in equal measure \u2013 this is an excellent portrait demonstrating the power of painting,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nAnonymous comments taken during the voting process illustrate the community clearly identified with both the sitter of this portrait and his personal circumstances. Comments include:<br \/>\n\u201cCan really sense the loss and softness in a very strong man who has experienced a lot.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI feel like I know this man &#8230;. It is so real.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt addresses me wherever I stand in the room, with a life force of character. The artist has worked magic into this one.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA modern Rembrandt with great feeling and emotion.\u201d<br \/>\nThe 42-year-old Sydney-based artist will receive $5,000, generously funded by the bequest of artist Jack Noel Kilgour.
