New school bus services roll into Maitland and Newcastle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As Hunter&nbsp;kids&nbsp;get ready to head back to school next week,&nbsp;the Minns Labor Government is&nbsp;today&nbsp;announcing&nbsp;better school bus connections&nbsp;\u2013 ensuring a growing population&nbsp;of local families have the&nbsp;services they need for the school run.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From&nbsp;the start of&nbsp;Term 1, 2026,&nbsp;students across Maitland and Newcastle&nbsp;will&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;from new and upgraded school bus services. These services have been introduced to&nbsp;meet rising demand, reduce&nbsp;overcrowding&nbsp;and get kids to school,&nbsp;and home again,&nbsp;safely, smoothly and on time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The improved services rolled out&nbsp;on&nbsp;27 January 2026, giving families&nbsp;the&nbsp;confidence that transport is in place and working as students return to the classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Maitland, the improvements&nbsp;to the bus services have gone&nbsp;beyond the school gate.&nbsp;The&nbsp;local community&nbsp;is&nbsp;also enjoying better weekend public transport, with Route 185&nbsp;&#8211; connecting Largs and Maitland via Bolwarra, Bolwarra&nbsp;Heights&nbsp;and Lorn&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;boosted with extra Saturday services and brand-new Sunday services.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These changes reflect the Minns Labor Government\u2019s commitment to practical, community-focused transport solutions that support families,&nbsp;get our students to and from school, and make regional life even better across the Hunter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The changes&nbsp;include:\u202f\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new route 2802 service will connect students directly from Maitland High School to\u202fHigh St Maitland, where it will become a new 185 service connecting students\u202fand the broader community\u202fto\u202fLorn,\u202fBolwarra, Bolwarra\u202fHeights\u202fand Largs.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An altered\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/transportnsw.info\/routes\/details\/hunter-valley-buses\/1471\/46147-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1471 service<\/a>\u202fwill connect Maitland Christian School and Hunter Valley Grammar School students with Chisholm.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An altered\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/transportnsw.info\/routes\/details\/hunter-valley-buses\/2396\/46239-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2396 service<\/a>\u202fwill\u202freplace\u202froute\u202f0342\u202ffor Tenambit Public School\u202fstudents\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An altered\u202f0342 service\u202fwill\u202fno longer service Tenambit Public School\u202fand will\u202fnow service Maitland Grossman High\u202fSchool, getting\u202fstudents\u202fhome\u202fto Metford\u202fearlier.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Route 185 Maitland to Largs and Gresford via Lorn\u202fand\u202fBolwarra,\u202fwill receive three\u202fadditional\u202fSaturday services and\u202feight\u202fadditional\u202fSunday services\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Newcastle,&nbsp;students attending Merewether High School and Hunter School of Performing Arts in Newcastle will&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;from enhanced school bus services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The changes include the introduction of two new services:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Route\u00a02337\u00a0(Morning):\u00a0This new morning service will travel from The Outlook Estate, through\u00a0Nikkinba\u00a0Ridge in Fletcher and Wallsend, before continuing to Merewether High School and Hunter School of Performing Arts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Route\u00a06300\u00a0(Afternoon):\u00a0The\u00a0afternoon service will\u00a0operate\u00a0from Merewether High School and Hunter School of Performing Arts, travelling via Wallsend and\u00a0Nikkinba\u00a0Ridge in Fletcher, and\u00a0terminating\u00a0at The Outlook Estate.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Regional Transport&nbsp;and Minister for Roads,&nbsp;Jenny Aitchison said:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaitland is growing, and our transport services need to grow with it.&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;delighted&nbsp;to see new and improved bus services being introduced for our community, because good public transport here&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;a nice-to-have&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;essential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor&nbsp;families and students, the school run is part of everyday life. These new bus services mean a more reliable trip to and from school, less overcrowding and fewer pressures during peak times&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;helping students arrive ready to learn and get home safely at the end of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe&nbsp;additional&nbsp;weekend services in Maitland are another big win, giving our whole community more flexibility to get where they need to go&nbsp;&#8211; whether that be a sports game,&nbsp;visiting friends and family&nbsp;or simply ducking to the shop.&nbsp;The benefits of frequent and reliable public transport cannot be understated.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acting Minister for the Hunter, Paul Scully said:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaitland&nbsp;and Newcastle\u2019s&nbsp;bus services need to keep pace with the changing needs of the community. We know how critical reliable public transport is, especially for our kids, which is why taking a close look at our bus networks really matters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s announcement follows the rollout of improved bus services across Cessnock and surrounding suburbs, making sure the Hunter is ready as schools return next week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Getting children to school safely and on time is non-negotiable. Education matters and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;central to the Hunter&#8217;s future.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Member for Wallsend,&nbsp;Sonia&nbsp;Hornery&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFamilies across Newcastle and our region know how important reliable school transport is \u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;about getting kids to class safely, on time and without unnecessary stress on parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNewer estates like&nbsp;Nikkinba&nbsp;Ridge and growing communities around Wallsend and Fletcher need transport that keeps pace.
