{"id":36984,"date":"2026-01-22T18:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T07:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=36984"},"modified":"2026-01-22T18:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T07:30:12","slug":"new-crime-commissioner-appointed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/01\/22\/new-crime-commissioner-appointed\/","title":{"rendered":"New Crime Commissioner appointed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Stephen Dametto has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the NSW Crime Commission, to lead its important work of tackling serious and organised crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Dametto has almost three decades of policing experience, holding senior positions in the Australian Federal Police, working in the UK Metropolitan Police\u2019s Counter Terrorism Command and providing operational leadership in numerous joint taskforces targeting terrorism and organised crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incoming Commissioner is currently the Assistant Commissioner, Eastern Command with the Australian Federal Police. Eastern Command is the AFP\u2019s largest regional command and Mr Dametto oversees almost one thousand staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his appointment as Assistant Commissioner, Mr Dametto was the AFP\u2019s Commander Counter Terrorism Investigations East \u2013 overseeing AFP\u2019s role within counter terrorism joint teams across Australia\u2019s eastern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has also practiced as a barrister in NSW, practicing in the areas of criminal law, proceeds of crime and inquests, and has practiced as a chartered accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key role of the NSW Crime Commission\u2019s is to investigate serious crime and criminal activity in NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also administers the&nbsp;<em>Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1990&nbsp;<\/em>\u2013 investigating and confiscating the ill-gotten proceeds of crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Dametto\u2019s appointment follows an extensive recruitment process and is for a five-year term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will begin the role on 24 February 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acting Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Paul Scully said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to congratulate Mr Dametto on his appointment.
