{"id":36410,"date":"2025-12-06T19:49:31","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T08:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=36410"},"modified":"2025-12-06T19:49:31","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T08:49:31","slug":"australia-starts-missile-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/12\/06\/australia-starts-missile-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia starts missile production"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Australia will start manufacturing Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles this month after the opening of a new factory in Port Wakefield, South Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the Albanese Government\u2019s commitment to establish a sovereign guided weapons industry and a future made in Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia and Defence will commence production of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles at the facility by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will create around 20 new manufacturing jobs on-site and support hundreds more across the supply chain, driven by the Albanese Government\u2019s investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GMLRS missile is a precision strike weapon launched from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) recently acquired under the Australian Army\u2019s long-range fires project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement today also marks a significant milestone in Australia\u2019s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise plan, meeting the production schedule outlined by the government last year. The factory \u2013 designed and built by Intract Australia, an Indigenous-owned and -operated company \u2013 was completed in just under seven months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Port Wakefield factory will be only the second facility in the world to produce GMLRS outside Lockheed Martin\u2019s facility in Camden, Arkansas. This achievement deepens Australia\u2013United States defence ties and opens significant export opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first cohort of Australian workers has successfully completed training at the Camden facility, accelerating knowledge transfer and strengthening Australia\u2019s sovereign defence capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project forms part of the Albanese Government\u2019s investment of up to $21 billion over the decade to acquire more long-range strike systems and manufacture longer-range munitions in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Acting Prime Minister, Richard Marles:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarting missile production in Australia this year is a major step in building the industrial strength our nation needs.
