{"id":36398,"date":"2025-12-06T19:43:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T08:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=36398"},"modified":"2025-12-06T19:43:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T08:43:12","slug":"minns-labor-government-welcomes-openais-investment-to-nsw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/12\/06\/minns-labor-government-welcomes-openais-investment-to-nsw\/","title":{"rendered":"Minns Labor Government welcomes OpenAI\u2019s investment to NSW"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The State\u2019s reputation as a global tech hub was confirmed today with the announcement from OpenAI that NSW will be home to the Asia Pacific\u2019s first OpenAI for Countries initiative with a $7 billion data centre in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minns Labor Government is working hard to cement NSW as the nation\u2019s capital for innovation and the state\u2019s status as a globally attractive investment destination. NSW is already a leader in data centres and technology infrastructure and the state is going from strength to strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data centres are critical infrastructure to support NSW\u2019s booming digital economy so the Minns Labor Government welcomes the proposal from OpenAI and data centre provider NEXTDC to establish the $7 billion data centre facility in Eastern Creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This announcement comes only days after OpenAI officially opened their first Australian office in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSW is also one of the top jurisdictions in the world for number of data centres with over 90 already in operation and another 20 under assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These opportunities for supporting innovative businesses through skills development, local innovation and AI adoption are key examples of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsw.gov.au\/departments-and-agencies\/investment-nsw\/resources\/nsw-industry-policy\">NSW Industry Policy<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsw.gov.au\/departments-and-agencies\/investment-nsw\/resources\/nsw-innovation-blueprint\">NSW Innovation Blueprint<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsw.gov.au\/departments-and-agencies\/investment-nsw\/resources\/nsw-trade-and-investment-strategy\">NSW Trade and Investment Strategy<\/a>&nbsp;in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these developments deliver on the NSW Government\u2019s commitment to supporting AI infrastructure that is responsible and supports workers across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, they will provide significant economic opportunities, strengthen STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) development pathways and accelerate job growth across key sectors including manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSydney is Australia\u2019s digital capital, backed by world-class talent and strong government investment &#8211; and OpenAI\u2019s arrival here takes that even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the years ahead, thousands of businesses will run smarter, be more competitive and innovative because some of the world\u2019s most advanced tech is calling New South Wales home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig private investments like this today are how we create jobs and grow the economy tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Acting Minister for Innovation,Science and Technology, Paul Scully said<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat OpenAI has chosen NSW as the first base in Asia Pacific cements the state as a global technology player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNSW is establishing itself as one of the top jurisdictions in the world for data centres.
