{"id":36156,"date":"2025-11-22T23:42:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T12:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=36156"},"modified":"2025-11-22T23:42:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T12:42:52","slug":"milestone-moment-as-development-application-lodged-for-newcastle-ocean-baths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/11\/22\/milestone-moment-as-development-application-lodged-for-newcastle-ocean-baths\/","title":{"rendered":"Milestone moment as development application lodged for Newcastle Ocean Baths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"isPasted\">The final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade will enhance comfort, convenience and opportunities for connection for visitors while preserving the site\u2019s heritage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City of Newcastle has lodged the development application for the revitalisation of the pavilion building including its distinctive Art Deco fa\u00e7ade, which will undergo conservation and refurbishment works including measures to retain its structural stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getmedia\/f1af4f80-ef41-480d-8c0c-c24d1cb83cf2\/CN_Newcastle-Ocean-Baths-DA-Concept-web.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's impression of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade\"><em>An artist&#8217;s impression of how the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade will look, revitalising the pavilion building and upper promenade.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application also includes upgrades to the upper promenade and surrounding areas to create a safer, more inviting and inclusive destination for all members of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City of Newcastle\u2019s Interim Executive Director City Infrastructure, Rob Dudgeon, said this was a significant milestone for the project, which preserves the heritage of the facility while ensuring it is fit-for-purpose for future generations. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Newcastle Ocean Baths have contributed to the social, historical and cultural fabric of our city for more than 100 years,\u201d Mr Dudgeon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have become an iconic visual symbol of Newcastle\u2019s coastal lifestyle and continue to be an important destination for community connection, recreation and leisure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe upgrades delivered to the pool and lower promenade have been embraced by the community, with more than 181,000 people visiting between September 2024 and April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis next stage of work will restore, protect and enhance the pavilion buildings and surrounding areas to ensure the much-loved facility remains accessible to all Novocastrians for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project includes upgraded pedestrian access from Shortland Esplanade to the front of the building, where visitors can appreciate the Art Deco fa\u00e7ade before making their way through to the upper promenade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An expanded caf\u00e9 and kiosk will be incorporated into the southern wing of the building, providing both sit-down dining and takeaway options.
