{"id":35938,"date":"2025-11-10T19:19:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=35938"},"modified":"2025-11-10T19:19:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:19:12","slug":"labors-secrecy-eroding-democracy-and-corporate-politics-as-usual-driving-young-people-away-says-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/11\/10\/labors-secrecy-eroding-democracy-and-corporate-politics-as-usual-driving-young-people-away-says-greens\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor\u2019s secrecy eroding democracy and corporate \u2018politics as usual\u2019 driving young people away, says Greens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian Greens say a new report showing a collapse in confidence in democracy is a consequence of a system that is increasingly closed, captured by corporate interests, and leaving young and regional Australians behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mckinnon.co\/index\/dashboard\"><em><u>McKinnon Index of Australian Democracy<\/u><\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>found confidence in Australia\u2019s democratic system is weakest among young people and those living outside major cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greens have repeatedly called for reforms to strengthen Australia\u2019s democratic institutions, including removing the influence of big money in politics, stronger freedom of information laws, greater political donation transparency and a national integrity system with real teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senator Steph Hodgins-May, Australian Greens spokesperson for democracy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen both major parties spend decades protecting corporate profits over improving people\u2019s lives, it\u2019s no wonder Australians are losing faith in the democratic institutions that are meant to serve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor came in the door promising transparency, but instead we\u2019ve seen a downward spiral into secrecy that fuels distrust and cynicism, especially among younger Australians who already feel disengaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow can young people trust the government when all they see from both major parties are backroom deals, corporate capitulation and laws that continue to sell out their future for private profits?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe climate crisis is getting worse, the housing market is dystopian and basic rights like education are becoming further out of reach. In the PM\u2019s own words, this approach is \u2018delulu with no selulu\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople in regional and rural communities watch corporations make billions and use tax loopholes to skip out on paying their fair share, while their local services close and the government tells them there\u2019s no money for public housing or healthcare.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t apathy, it\u2019s a natural response to seeing your government work so hard for Gina and Clive and do the bare minimum for everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf our government is serious about restoring faith in democracy, it should start by breaking the stranglehold of corporate money on politics and prioritise integrity over political ambitions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Greens say a new report showing a collapse in confidence in democracy is a consequence of a system that is increasingly closed, captured by corporate interests, and leaving young and regional Australians behind.
