{"id":35930,"date":"2025-11-10T19:15:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=35930"},"modified":"2025-11-10T19:15:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:15:52","slug":"ninety-five-not-out-inspiring-nsw-seniors-share-their-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/11\/10\/ninety-five-not-out-inspiring-nsw-seniors-share-their-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ninety-five Not Out\u2019 \u2013 Inspiring NSW seniors share their stories"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tales spanning technological change, women\u2019s empowerment and New South Wales\u2019s natural beauty are among 100 literary masterpieces featured in Volume 11 of&nbsp;<em>Seniors\u2019 Stories<\/em>&nbsp;launched today at Parliament House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seniors\u2019 Stories elevates the voices of seniors and provides a platform for older authors to reflect on the theme of \u2018Then and Now\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Readers are offered insights into authors\u2019 youthful memories, changing times and life-shaping moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cranebrook author Marie Nevin, who turned 96 in September, is the oldest contributor for this year\u2019s edition. Marie\u2019s story \u2018<em>Ninety-Five Not Out\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;vividly portrays her transition from childhood to embracing modern technology later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI was born in 1929 in Marrickville . . . I remember while driving there, the \u2018Bottle\u2011O\u2019 would come down the street in a horse and cart calling \u2018Bottle\u2011o, Bottle\u2011o\u2019,\u201d she writes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI am now ninety\u2011five years old. I like to go out and have coffee and cake \u2026 I have thirty\u2011four grandchildren, forty great\u2011grandchildren \u2026 I am thankful for having a mobile phone as it keeps me in touch with them all \u2026 I have an iPad which I use every day, playing word games to keep my mind active.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Marie<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>writing is a family affair<em>.&nbsp;<\/em>Her son-in-law Paul Ryan, from Emu Plains, also contributed a short story titled \u2018The Wharf\u2019.<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Seniors\u2019 Stories<\/em>&nbsp;Volume 11 features nine stories translated to an author\u2019s chosen language alongside English versions to reflect the cultural diversity of communities across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translated languages include Bengali, Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Malayalam and Sinhalese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,100 personal stories of older people across NSW have been published in Seniors\u2019 Stories since the NSW Government launched the initiative in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is open to all Seniors Card and Senior Savers Card holders.
