{"id":35662,"date":"2025-10-27T18:48:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T07:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=35662"},"modified":"2025-10-27T18:48:57","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T07:48:57","slug":"greens-demand-government-treat-housing-crisis-as-matter-of-public-urgency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/10\/27\/greens-demand-government-treat-housing-crisis-as-matter-of-public-urgency\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens demand government treat housing crisis as matter of public urgency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian Greens have put forward a motion to parliament today calling on the Senate to recognise Australia\u2019s housing crisis as a matter of public urgency, following recent data revealing the dire state of our housing problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House prices have risen at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/residential\/perth-nears-1m-milestone-as-house-prices-hit-record-high-20251020-p5n3ta\"><u>&nbsp;fastest rate in four years<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as rates of home ownership have declined, especially among young young people. One in three property markets across Australia now have a median value of $1 million plus, a new record-high,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotality.com\/au\/insights\/articles\/one-in-three-property-markets-now-command-a-seven-figure-median\"><u>according to Cotality<\/u><\/a>. While&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insight.domain.com.au\/research-insights\/industry-news\/australian-house-prices-are-rising-at-their-fastest-rate-in-four-years\/\"><u>Domain data<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;shows Sydney house prices jumped by $58,148 (3.4 per cent) in just 90 days, the fastest quarterly growth in more than two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greens say Labor is making the crisis worse as their policies, such as the $180 billion tax breaks for landlords and the 5% deposit scheme, are spiking prices and putting home ownership further out of reach for renters and first home buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/most-australians-agree-theres-a-housing-crisis-but-they-differ-on-whats-causing-it-and-how-to-fix-it-267963\"><u>89% of voters agreeing that Australia is in a housing crisis<\/u><\/a>, the Greens are calling on the government to listen to voters and address the root causes rather than turbocharge our housing and homelessness crises through minor interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens spokesperson for housing, homelessness and finance Senator Barbara Pocock:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis government needs to start treating housing as a human right instead of a game of monopoly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia is in a housing crisis that is spiralling out of control. House prices are soaring and Labor\u2019s $180 billion tax perks for rich property investors are pouring fuel on the fire, locking renters and first-home buyers out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The Australian dream of home ownership is dead.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aihw.gov.au\/getmedia\/4b343cfa-5612-4fbc-8803-97e98dc3caba\/aihw-aus-253.pdf?v=20250911134326&amp;inline=true\"><u>Rates&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of home ownership are falling especially among those under 35, with 25-29-year-olds dropping from 50% in 1971 to 36% in 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHome ownership is out of reach for so many Australians. Thirty years ago it took 4 years of average weekly earnings to buy a house, now it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/residential\/home-repayments-on-track-to-hit-8-times-weekly-income-20250704-p5mcj1\"><u>on track<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to be more than 8 times the average. How do first-home buyers stand a chance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnder the major parties, housing has become a wealth accumulation asset, not a roof over our heads. Housing finance is increasingly spent on investment properties not home ownership, with investors making up around their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.rea-group.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/16001513\/PropTrack-Terri-Scheer-Investor-Report-2025.pdf\"><u>highest share<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of new lending since 2017.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia\u2019s housing market is rigged in favour of wealthy property investors and banks and it\u2019s failing everyone else and it\u2019s only going to get worse &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westpaciq.com.au\/economics\/2025\/09\/westpac-housing-pulse-august-2025?ai=1756700369921&amp;cd=81406&amp;cid=edm\"><u>house prices are forecast to increase by 9 percent next year<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear where Labor\u2019s priorities lie &#8211; with the big banks, property developers and wealthy investors &#8211; while another generation of renters and potential first-home buyers are left behind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHomelessness in Australia is the worst in living memory, having increased by 10 percent since Labor was elected. We\u2019re seeing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aihw.gov.au\/reports\/homelessness-services\/specialist-homelessness-services-feature-analysis\/contents\/about\"><u>nine potentially avoidable deaths of homeless people on our streets every day<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;which is unacceptable. We still don\u2019t have a national plan to end homelessness. If Labor can find billions for investors, why can\u2019t they find homes for people sleeping rough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEnding the housing crisis is possible.
