{"id":35261,"date":"2025-10-06T21:15:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T10:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=35261"},"modified":"2025-10-06T21:15:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T10:15:34","slug":"australia-and-papua-new-guinea-sign-mutual-defence-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/10\/06\/australia-and-papua-new-guinea-sign-mutual-defence-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and Papua New Guinea sign Mutual Defence Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Media release<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia and Papua New Guinea have elevated our relationship to an Alliance, with the signing of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/countries\/papua-new-guinea\/papua-new-guinea-australia-mutual-defence-treaty\">Papua New Guinea \u2013 Australia Mutual Defence Treaty.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alliance will be Australia\u2019s first in more than 70 years, and Papua New Guinea\u2019s first with any country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signed today in Canberra by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon James Marape MP, the Treaty reflects a shared commitment to peace and stability in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will enter into force upon completion of both countries\u2019 domestic treaty-making processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on our countries\u2019 deep strategic trust and respect, the Treaty contains mutual defence obligations. Both countries recognise an armed attack on either would be a danger to the peace and security of both, and declare they would act together to meet the common danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Treaty explicitly refers to both Australia\u2019s and Papua New Guinea\u2019s respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of our neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It provides for the expansion and modernisation of Australia\u2019s and Papua New Guinea\u2019s defence relationship, including potential future recruitment of each countries\u2019 citizens into respective forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultations will commence on a recruitment pathway to enable Papua New Guinea citizens to join the Australian Defence Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the first step, from 1 January 2026, eligible permanent residents living in Australia who are also Papua New Guinea citizens will be able to apply to join the Australian Defence Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s signing follows a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/joint-communique-papua-new-guinea-and-australia-mutual-defence-treaty\">Joint Communiqu\u00e9<\/a>&nbsp;released by both leaders at Papua New Guinea\u2019s Golden Jubilee celebrations in Port Moresby last month, which set out the core principles of the Treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding on more than 50 years of cooperation and respect, the signing of the Papua New Guinea \u2013 Australia Mutual Defence Treaty is a shared historic moment for our two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Treaty reflects the deep trust between Australia and Papua New Guinea across the breadth of our bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPapua New Guinea proposed this Treaty, and we were honoured to agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Alliance is built on generations of mutual trust, and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the Pacific remains peaceful, stable and prosperous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy continuing to build our security relationships in the region, we safeguard our own security.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Media release Australia and Papua New Guinea have elevated our relationship to an Alliance, with the signing of the&nbsp;Papua New Guinea \u2013 Australia Mutual Defence Treaty.
