{"id":34222,"date":"2025-08-11T12:27:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T02:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=34222"},"modified":"2025-08-11T12:27:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T02:27:16","slug":"minns-labor-government-backs-new-critical-hydrogen-research-in-the-illawarra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/08\/11\/minns-labor-government-backs-new-critical-hydrogen-research-in-the-illawarra\/","title":{"rendered":"Minns Labor Government backs new critical hydrogen research in the Illawarra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Minns Labor Government has strengthened the Illawarra\u2019s role at the forefront of the nation\u2019s growing hydrogen industry with a new hydrogen research deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a visit to its campus today, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology Anoulack Chanthivong announced a $650,000 grant to the University of Wollongong (UoW) for it to lead critical research into hydrogen pipeline safety. This research has the potential to transform safe hydrogen transportation across New South Wales, and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Wollongong stands out as the only institution in Australia &#8211; and one of just five globally &#8211; with the capability to conduct this type of hydrogen pipeline testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be delivered over two years, the research will zero-in on the leading cause of hydrogen pipeline failures and develop risk assessment and design tools to address them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By addressing safety risks and improving regulations, this research has the potential to drive down infrastructure costs and propel Australia\u2019s hydrogen industry to the front of the pack, in line with the NSW Industry Policy\u2019s key mission of Net Zero and Energy Transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will involve strong collaboration with industry stakeholders including, Inspiring Australia NSW and Science Space, and underscores the NSW Government\u2019s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coinciding with Minister Chanthivong\u2019s launch of National Science Week at UoW today, this research delivers on the Minns Labor Government\u2019s promise to invest in new, homegrown solutions aimed at reducing emissions and unlocking the full potential of a net zero economy across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology Anoulack Chanthivong said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we kick-off National Science week, the Minns Labor Government is excited to be backing critical hydrogen research with a $650,000 grant to the University of Wollongong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project sits at the intersection of our Industry Policy and Innovation Blueprint, reflecting the importance of investing in scientific research to help solve the challenges shaping the future of some of our biggest industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe University of Wollongong has produced nation-leading and globally-recognised work on hydrogen in the past and the NSW Government is excited to see UoW, in partnership with industry, pave the way for a more sustainable and innovative future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for the Illawarra and the South Coast Ryan Park said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough this $650,000 grant to the University of Wollongong, the Illawarra is poised to become a hub for scientific innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to support the University of Wollongong in vital research that could address global challenges and positions the Illawarra as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Illawarra is leading the way in advancing hydrogen research and development through projects like the hydrogen bus trial, hydrogen-powered garbage trucks and the state\u2019s first heavy vehicle hydrogen refuelling station and the establishment of the Illawarra Hydrogen Technology Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding from this success, the grant to the University of Wollongong is a welcome means to further advance this research and innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Wollongong Professor Max Lu AO said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the NSW government\u2019s funding for hydrogen pipeline research, a priority area for our university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With expertise in green hydrogen and renewable energy, UOW is driving innovation in sustainable fuels to support economic growth in NSW and Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minns Labor Government has strengthened the Illawarra\u2019s role at the forefront of the nation\u2019s growing hydrogen industry with a new hydrogen research deal.
