{"id":34175,"date":"2025-08-08T09:26:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:26:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=34175"},"modified":"2025-08-08T09:26:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:26:30","slug":"opposition-push-spurs-minns-labor-government-action-on-deepfake-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/08\/08\/opposition-push-spurs-minns-labor-government-action-on-deepfake-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition push spurs Minns Labor Government action on deepfake abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NSW Opposition has welcomed the Minns Labor Government\u2019s decision to act on sexually explicit deepfakes, after the Opposition introduced its own legislation to criminalise deepfake abuse and scheduled the second reading of its Private Member\u2019s Bill in the Parliament today.<br>\u00a0<br>The Crimes Amendment (Deepfake Sexual Material) Bill 2025, put forward by the Opposition, aims to criminalise the production, sharing and threat to share AI-generated sexual content designed to humiliate or exploit a real person.<br>\u00a0<br>After the Opposition\u2019s move announced last month, the Government has been spurred into action and now announced it will introduce legislation of its own, with similar objectives. The Opposition will work constructively to ensure strong protections are delivered quickly.<br>\u00a0<br>Leader of the Opposition Mark Speakman said deepfake abuse is a growing threat that demands swift action.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cThis is not a grey area. If someone is creating or spreading sexually explicit deepfakes to degrade another person, they should face serious consequences,\u201d Mr Speakman said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cWe flagged this last month and prepared a bill to deal with it. I\u2019m pleased the Government is now taking steps in the same direction. This is about protecting people from being digitally violated.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Shadow Attorney General Alister Henskens said the Opposition\u2019s bill laid strong groundwork for tough, modern protections.<br>\u201cNo one should have their image or voice used against them like this. If it\u2019s not your body, not your voice, it\u2019s not someone else\u2019s right to control,\u201d Mr Henskens said.<br>\u201cThe Coalition\u2019s bill set out a path forward and we\u2019re encouraged that the Government is now backing this much-needed reform.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cIt\u2019s a shame that this minority government doesn\u2019t work with the opposition to try and address these important social issues. \u00a0This is a fake Premier copying our deepfake legislation.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Shadow Minister for Women Felicity Wilson said deepfake abuse is already damaging lives and the time for change is now.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a future problem. It\u2019s happening now in classrooms, workplaces and on social media,\u201d Ms Wilson said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cWomen and girls are being targeted by fake images that look terrifyingly real.
