{"id":3239,"date":"2019-07-10T04:38:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T04:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3239"},"modified":"2019-07-10T04:38:23","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T04:38:23","slug":"city-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/07\/10\/city-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"City wheels out first driverless vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">The future of automated transport has arrived in Newcastle with the City\u2019s brand-new driverless shuttle bus unveiled today.<br \/>\nWrapped in City of Newcastle\u2019s branding, the 11-seater vehicle was revealed for the first time by Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes at Keolis Downer\u2019s Hamilton depot, where rigorous safety testing will soon commence before passengers can enjoy the unique service along the harbour foreshore.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DVinside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle\/DVinside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"DVinside.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>KD Hunter General Manager Mark Dunlop with the Lord Mayor and KD&#8217;s Sue Wiblin.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nThe Lord Mayor said it was fascinating to inspect the driverless vehicle ahead of its initial 12-month trial.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is a major milestone for the city\u2019s smart city journey, and I look forward to working with Transport for NSW and partners Keolis Downer on this unique opportunity to make the future of automated transport in Newcastle a reality as we transform the city into a living lab,\u201d Councillor Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe City\u2019s vision for a smart, integrated transport network begins in earnest with the arrival of this new driverless vehicle, which we propose connecting with Newcastle\u2019s integrated public transport network.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe are planning for passengers to be able to take in views of the City\u2019s harbour along the proposed 2km loop service, from Watt Street along Wharf Road to Nobbys and back, making it very appealing to tourists. A larger circuit will include some of Newcastle\u2019s other beachside destinations after a couple of months.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DVinside1.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle\/DVinside1.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"DVinside1.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DVinside2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle\/DVinside2.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"DVinside2.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>KD Hunter General Manager Mark Dunlop with the Lord Mayor and KD&#8217;s Sue Wiblin<\/sup><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DVinside3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-wheels-out-first-driverless-vehicle\/DVinside3.jpg.aspx?width=300&amp;height=450\" alt=\"DVinside3.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Nduy9usjoQ?fs=1&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;version=3\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nKeolis Downer New Mobilities Manager Sue Wiblin confirmed the trial was being developed in accordance with national and state legislation and regulations to ensure it met all safety standards.<br \/>\n\u201cOver the next month, we will complete a rigorous safety testing program, on road and off road, to prepare the vehicle for customer services,\u201d Ms Wiblin said.<br \/>\n\u201cIn-built computers and sensing systems capable of detecting obstacles, anticipating movement and evaluating risk of collision, are what sets this vehicle apart from the risks associated with human-controlled cars.<br \/>\n\u201cThese systems are capable of detecting vehicle movement and are also able determine the travel route, make decisions to slow down, brake and alternate the vehicle\u2019s path if required.\u201d<br \/>\nWhile the vehicle is fully automated, a chaperone, who will always be onboard during operations, will be able to stop the vehicle via an override system if required.<br \/>\nTesting will be carried out before the service is launched.<br \/>\nWhen launched, the trial will help gauge demand for driverless vehicle operations and assess their suitability in mixed traffic and transport scenarios in Newcastle.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The future of automated transport has arrived in Newcastle with the City\u2019s brand-new driverless shuttle bus unveiled today.
