{"id":31940,"date":"2025-03-20T07:41:37","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T07:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=31940"},"modified":"2025-03-20T07:41:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T07:41:37","slug":"strengthening-medicare-cheaper-medicines-to-get-even-cheaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/03\/20\/strengthening-medicare-cheaper-medicines-to-get-even-cheaper\/","title":{"rendered":"Strengthening Medicare: Cheaper medicines to get even cheaper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Albanese Labor Government is making cheaper medicines even cheaper \u2013 with a script to cost Australians no more than $25 under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another key cost of living measure delivered by the Albanese Government which will continue to put downward pressure on inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having already slashed the cost of medicines \u2013 with the largest cut to the cost of medicines in the history of the PBS in 2023 \u2013 we\u2019re now going even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a more than 20 per cent cut in the maximum cost of PBS medicines, which will save Australians over $200 million each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only Labor is committed to delivering cost of living relief for Australians, while strengthening Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making medicines cheaper is a tangible way we\u2019re helping with the cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four out of five PBS medicines will become cheaper because of this $689 million investment in next week\u2019s Budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time that PBS medicines cost no more than $25 was 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pensioners and concession cardholders will continue to benefit from the freeze to the cost of their PBS medicines, with the cost frozen at its current level of $7.70 until 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This builds on action we\u2019ve already taken to deliver cost of living relief through Cheaper Medicines, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>More free and cheaper medicines, sooner<\/strong>, with a 25 per cent&nbsp;reduction in the number of scripts a patient must fill before the PBS Safety Net kicks in \u2013&nbsp;<strong>$480 million&nbsp;<\/strong>(July 2022)<\/li><li><strong>The largest cut to the cost of medicines in the history of the PBS<\/strong>, with the maximum cost of a script falling to $30, from $42.50 \u2013&nbsp;<strong>$624 million<\/strong>&nbsp;(January 2023)<\/li><li><strong>60-day prescriptions saving time and money<\/strong>&nbsp;for millions of Australians with an ongoing health condition \u2013&nbsp;<strong>$165 million<\/strong>&nbsp; (Three phases from September 2023)<\/li><li><strong>Freezing the cost of PBS medicines<\/strong>, with co-payments not rising with inflation for all Australians for the first time in 25 years \u2013&nbsp;<strong>$9 million&nbsp;<\/strong>(January 2025)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If re-elected the Albanese Government will pass legislation and $25 maximum PBS scripts will start from January 1 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prime-minister-anthony-albanese\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy Government will continue to deliver cost of living relief for all Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCheaper medicines is another way we are helping with the cost of living, while putting downward pressure on inflation \u2013 our number one focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith cheaper medicines, more free GP visits and a stronger Medicare, we say to Australians: we\u2019ve got your back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"minister-for-health-mark-butler\">Minister for Health Mark Butler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last time Australians paid no more than $25 for a PBS medicine was over 20 years ago. Cheaper medicines are good for the hip pocket and good for your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen Peter Dutton was Health Minister, he tried to make medicines cost more, not less.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeter Dutton tried to jack up the cost of medicines by up to $5 a script and put free medicines for sick pensioners even further out of reach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn opposition, Peter Dutton and the Liberals voted to block cheaper medicines six times<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe contrast this election is clear: cheaper medicines with a re-elected Albanese Government, or the frankly terrifying legacy of Peter Dutton, who wants medicines to cost more, not less.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Albanese Labor Government is making cheaper medicines even cheaper \u2013 with a script to cost Australians no more than $25 under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
