{"id":3165,"date":"2019-06-28T13:13:39","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T13:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3165"},"modified":"2019-06-28T13:13:39","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T13:13:39","slug":"city-makes-pact-with-local-artist-for-naidoc-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/06\/28\/city-makes-pact-with-local-artist-for-naidoc-week\/","title":{"rendered":"City makes pact with local artist for NAIDOC Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">City of Newcastle is counting down the days to NAIDOC week 2019 after drawing on the inspiration of a talented local Aboriginal artist to help celebrate First Nations people.<br \/>\nIn celebration of the week-long event from 7-14 July, the City has commissioned local artist Jasmine Craciun to bring this year\u2019s theme &#8211;\u00a0<em>Voice, Treaty and Truth &#8211;<\/em>\u00a0to life in a colorful display of paintings to be draped on flagpoles across the City.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Banners-(1).JPG\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-makes-pact-with-local-artist-for-NAIDOC-Week\/Banners-(1).JPG.aspx\" alt=\"Banners-(1).JPG\" \/><strong><em>Voice, Treaty, Truth:<\/em>\u00a0 The three images which will feature on City banners to promote NAIDOC week in July<\/strong><br \/>\nCraciun, a proud Barkindji and Malyangapa woman, says intense pride lies behind each of her three images and their connection to the words of this year\u2019s theme.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I think of the word \u2018Voice\u2019 I think of protest and change, I think loud and proud,\u201d said the 21-year-old (pictured below) said.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"JasmineCraciun.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-makes-pact-with-local-artist-for-NAIDOC-Week\/JasmineCraciun.jpg.aspx?width=357&amp;height=550\" alt=\"JasmineCraciun.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cThe red was used as the base colour in this work as, to me, red is the colour that speaks and represents being unapologetically proud and loud.\u00a0\u201cA treaty is a coming together of peoples, a sign of solidarity, and within this work you can see the many symbols for waterhole or meeting place.<br \/>\n&#8220;This work uses blue and purple tones to instill a sense of peace and calmness that could ensue in a country where the First Nations people not only have a treaty but support and understanding from all non-indigenous Australians.\u201d<br \/>\nCraciun says her third image speaks to the need for transparency in the education of Australian indigenous history.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve tried to portray the bridges of history trying to break through into the upper level of the painting where Australia\u2019s \u2018comfortable\u2019 history lives,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can see the upper level is smooth lines and clean shapes representing the smoothing of Australia\u2019s early history, compared to the chaotic \u2018hard-to-swallow\u2019 truth boiling below.\u201d<br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the artworks, both in their design and meaning, would play an instrumental role in supporting this year\u2019s NAIDOC week celebrations.<br \/>\n\u201cThese works are important as they provide a real representation of our First Nations People\u2019s history told through the lens of a local artist,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cNAIDOC week is an important event on the City\u2019s calendar and it\u2019s fantastic that we have been able to bring Jasmine on board to help with the promotion of this special occasion.&#8221;<br \/>\nLocal activities during NAIDOC week will be announced closer to the event.
