{"id":31464,"date":"2025-02-19T20:53:49","date_gmt":"2025-02-19T20:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=31464"},"modified":"2025-02-19T21:01:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-19T21:01:43","slug":"mens-behaviour-change-program-expanded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/02\/19\/mens-behaviour-change-program-expanded\/","title":{"rendered":"Men\u2019s behaviour change program expanded"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Minns Labor Government is continuing work to create a safer New South Wales by taking a whole of community approach to addressing domestic and family violence, with Men\u2019s Behaviour Change Programs (MBCPs) rolled out across an additional seven locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>$10 million is being invested to increase the availability of these programs across the state as part of the Minns Labor Government\u2019s $245.6 million package to address domestic and family violence in New South Wales, which has included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Implementing the state\u2019s first ever Primary Prevention Strategy<\/li><li>Working to expand the Staying Home Leaving Violence program state wide<\/li><li>Introducing new offences for repeated and serious breaches of Apprehended Domesticc Violence Orders<\/li><li>Making it harder than ever for alleged domestic violence offenders to get bail<\/li><li>Introducing Serious Domestic Abuse Prevention Orders<\/li><li>Modernising the definition of \u2018stalking\u2019 to include technology based harassment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>MBCPs are evidence-based group programs and services that focus on working with perpetrators of domestic and family violence to reduce or prevent the recurrence of abusive behaviour by a perpetrator towards a partner or family member. Between 2022 and 2024, 1,800 men participated in MBCPs in NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minns Labor Government\u2019s priority remains the safety of victim-survivors of domestic and family violence and ensuring they have access to support when they need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this expansion, the programs will now be available across 35 locations through 15 providers. The new locations are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nowra, Shoalhaven LGA &#8211; Anglicare<\/li><li>Ulladulla, Shoalhaven LGA &#8211; Anglicare<\/li><li>Forster, Mid-Coast LGA \u2013 Manning Support Services<\/li><li>Gloucester, Mid-Coast LGA \u2013 Manning Support Services<\/li><li>Lithgow, Lithgow LGA \u2013 Plus Community<\/li><li>Blacktown, Blacktown LGA \u2013 Relationships Australia<\/li><li>Maitland, Maitland LGA \u2013 Relationships Australia<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Providers must be registered as compliant with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dcj.nsw.gov.au\/documents\/service-providers\/domestic-and-family-violence-services\/men-s-behaviour-change-programs\/Men-s-Behaviour-Change-Programs-Practice-Standards.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Practice Standards for Men\u2019s Domestic Violence Behaviour Change Programs<\/a>&nbsp;and deliver evidence-based interventions, as well as additional one-on-one supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jodie Harrison said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NSW Government is working hard to build a safer New South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese programs are about taking accountability, about breaking the cycle of violence by working with perpetrators to understand their behaviour is never acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact is to build a safer New South Wales, free from domestic and family violence, we need men who use violence to take responsibility for their actions and change their behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NSW Women\u2019s Safety Commissioner Dr Hannah Tonkin said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAddressing domestic and family violence is a priority in our state and nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe expansion of the Men\u2019s Behaviour Change Program will promote the safety of women and children by holding men accountable for their violent and abusive behaviour and supporting them to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrograms like this can encourage participants to take responsibility for their behaviour and provide them with the skills and tools necessary to stop using violence and maintain respectful relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MBCP provider Relationships Australia NSW CEO Elisabeth Shaw said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPromoting the safety of women and children is essential to preventing domestic and family violence in our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Men\u2019s Behaviour Change Program works with men who use violence to take responsibility, guiding them to be accountable for their actions and stop abusive behaviours in their family relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese men have recognised the need to change and have sought support to become safer partners and fathers. Through the program, they reflect on their behaviour, understand the underlying drivers of violence, and learn practical tools and strategies to manage themselves and de-escalate potentially aggressive situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also work with the men\u2019s current or former partners and their children to ensure their safety and support recovery.
