{"id":3139,"date":"2019-06-26T11:19:07","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T11:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3139"},"modified":"2019-06-26T11:19:07","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T11:19:07","slug":"nsw-government-enlists-csiro-in-25m-stem-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/06\/26\/nsw-government-enlists-csiro-in-25m-stem-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW GOVERNMENT ENLISTS CSIRO IN $25M STEM PLAN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW Government has teamed with the CSIRO to launch a new $25 million program to attract, support and retain young people in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education and skilled careers.<br \/>\nMinister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said Generation STEM is a 10-year education program that will initially be rolled out in Western Sydney to create the next generation of STEM-skilled workers.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Generation STEM program will help create a steady pipeline of STEM skilled students,\u201d Mr Lee said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis investment by the NSW Government in a smart workforce of the future will benefit industries that can support continued growth of quality jobs for our economy.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Lee said the first phase, the STEM Community Partnerships Program (STEM CPP), will see Year 9 and 10 students develop STEM projects focused on local industry challenges. The Western Sydney location was selected because it has major developments that will require large numbers of STEM-skilled staff, including the Western Sydney Airport, Aerotropolis and Sydney Science Park.<br \/>\nUpon completion, the projects will be showcased to industry, local councils and schools.<br \/>\nStudents will also attend web-based masterclasses, and visit workplaces to meet STEM professionals to learn about STEM career opportunities.<br \/>\nGeneration STEM takes an industry-led and community driven approach, ensuring tailored programs address local employer requirements and equip young people with the relevant skills to secure local jobs.<br \/>\nThe investment will be held by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sief.org.au\/\">Science and Industry Endowment Fund<\/a>\u00a0(SIEF), for which CSIRO\u2019s Chief Executive, Dr Larry Marshall is the Trustee.<br \/>\nDr Marshall said the CSIRO solves Australia\u2019s greatest challenges through innovative science and technology.<br \/>\n\u201cThrough this endowment to SIEF, the Generation STEM partnership will inspire tomorrow\u2019s STEM leaders and grow Australia\u2019s future success and prosperity,\u201d Dr Marshall said.<br \/>\n\u201cToday\u2019s students will use science to invent their own careers, creating a better future for all of us.
