Indonesian-speaking Darwin MP Luke Gosling will lead a special Regional Trade Taskforce\u00a0of the Caucus\u00a0to\u00a0assist in the development of\u00a0trade policies that will boost economic\u00a0growth\u00a0and create jobs for Australians.
\nThe Taskforce will focus on trade links\u00a0with\u00a0the Asia-Pacific Region.\u00a0It will consult with businesses, hold industry forums and report to\u00a0me and\u00a0Shadow Trade Minister Madeleine King on\u00a0what our nation needs to do to increase our trade engagement right across the region.
\nMy appointment of\u00a0Mr Gosling to lead this\u00a0Taskforce recognises the particular importance of boosting trade between businesses in Northern Australia and the nations to our immediate north, including\u00a0Indonesia, Singapore,\u00a0Malaysia and\u00a0Timor-Leste.
\nDespite their proximity to Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia sit outside the list of our top ten trading partners at numbers 13\u00a0and 11\u00a0respectively.
\nThere is great scope to\u00a0build our trade engagement\u00a0across the region, and Mr Gosling\u2019s capacity for hard work makes him the perfect choice to advise\u00a0Labor\u00a0on how our nation can capitalise on these opportunities.
\nThis is about jobs\u00a0for Australians.
\nMr Gosling, the Member for Solomon,\u00a0had a distinguished military career\u00a0and has worked in Timor-Leste as a\u00a0Presidential\u00a0adviser and also established a not-for-profit charity to benefit the fledgling nation.
