{"id":3044,"date":"2019-06-16T02:31:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-16T02:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3044"},"modified":"2019-06-16T02:31:59","modified_gmt":"2019-06-16T02:31:59","slug":"key-to-the-city-for-proud-novocastrian-naval-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/06\/16\/key-to-the-city-for-proud-novocastrian-naval-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Key to the City for proud Novocastrian Naval Officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">HMAS\u00a0<em>Newcastle<\/em>\u00a0Commander Anita Sellick has been honoured with the Key to the City at a ceremony today to farewell the ship before it\u2019s decommissioned later this month.<br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes presented the born-and-bred Novocastrian the ceremonial honour following HMAS\u00a0<em>Newcastle<\/em>\u2019s Freedom of Entry March, which gave the public a chance to farewell the vessel and her company for the final time.<br \/>\n<sup><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Commander-Sellick-receiving-Key-to-the-City-inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Key-to-the-City-for-proud-Novocastrian-Naval-Offic\/Commander-Sellick-receiving-Key-to-the-City-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Commander-Sellick-receiving-Key-to-the-City-inside.jpg\" \/><\/sup><strong>Lord\u00a0Mayor Nuatali Nelmes honouring HMAS\u00a0<em>Newcastle<\/em>\u00a0Commander Anita Sellick\u00a0with\u00a0Federal Senator Arthur Sinodinis<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Lord Mayor said the gesture was a tribute to commander Sellick\u2019s Newcastle roots and her formidable achievement, as a woman, rising through the ranks of one of Australia\u2019s most respected, traditionally male-dominated institutions.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s an honour to present the Key to the City to Commander Sellick in recognition of her services to Newcastle and the Royal Australian Navy,&#8221; the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cCommander Sellick assumed command of HMAS\u00a0<em>Newcastle<\/em>\u00a0in January last year and will embark on her final voyage in control of the ship when she sails out of the heads for the final time on Tuesday.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re proud of our history with the vessel and we\u2019re even prouder that Commander Sellick is at the helm.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Freedom-of-Entry-1-courtesy-inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Key-to-the-City-for-proud-Novocastrian-Naval-Offic\/Freedom-of-Entry-1-courtesy-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Freedom-of-Entry-1-courtesy-inside.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>Commander Sellick leading her company as they Exercised their Right of Freedom of Entry to the City.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nCommander Anita Sellick joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1994 after graduating from the Australian Defence Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science.<br \/>\nFor meritorious service, she was awarded a Conspicuous Medal in the 2013 Queen\u2019s Birthday Honours; and holds a Chief of Joint Operations Group Commendation for a past command.<br \/>\nShe also holds a Baceholor of Science (Oceanography\/Computer Science) from the University of NSW and is studying her Master of Business Administration.<br \/>\nSince it was commissioned in 1993,\u00a0 the ship has maintained close links with Newcastle through active support of her adopted charity organisation, Newcastle Senior School, formerly known as the Hunter Orthopaedic School.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Freedom-of-Entry-2-courtesy-CN-inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Key-to-the-City-for-proud-Novocastrian-Naval-Offic\/Freedom-of-Entry-2-courtesy-CN-inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Freedom-of-Entry-2-courtesy-CN-inside.jpg\" \/><strong><sup>The ship&#8217;s company at today&#8217;s march.<\/sup><\/strong><br \/>\nThe ship\u2019s company has raised substantial funds over the years, providing the school with a bus, undertaking working bees and joining in sporting activities.<br \/>\nThe final fundraising campaign, \u2018The Great Race\u2019, aims to raise $20,000 and is still live at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/thegreatrace\"><u>gofundme.com\/thegreatrace<\/u><\/a><u>.<\/u><br \/>\nBoth Commander Sellick and the ship\u2019s departure on Tuesday will be marked by a seven-gun salute from the historic guns at Fort Scratchley followed by return volley from the ship.<br \/>\nAfter more than 25 years of service, she\u00a0will finally be decommissioned at the Garden Island Naval base in Sydney.<br \/>\nFor more ore details, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Explore\/Things-to-do\/What-s-On\/Events\/HMAS-Newcastle\"><u>newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Explore\/Things-to-do\/What-s-On\/Events\/HMAS-Newcastle<\/u><\/a><u>.<\/u><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HMAS\u00a0Newcastle\u00a0Commander Anita Sellick has been honoured with the Key to the City at a ceremony today to farewell the ship before it\u2019s decommissioned later this month.
