{"id":3004,"date":"2019-06-11T18:22:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T18:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=3004"},"modified":"2019-06-11T18:22:03","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T18:22:03","slug":"free-wi-fi-now-live-across-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/06\/11\/free-wi-fi-now-live-across-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Wi-Fi now live across the City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newcastle\u2019s vision to be a globally connected smart city is another step closer with the launch of a free public Wi-Fi network in Newcastle\u2019s East End.<br \/>\nThe City Wi-Fi network is one initiative of CN\u2019s Smart City program designed to increase connectivity and information sharing between the community, business and the digital world.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"InsideWi-Fi.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Free-Wi-Fi-now-live-across-the-City\/InsideWi-Fi.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"InsideWi-Fi.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>L-R: Nick Brown from Countrytell*, Brett Woods from CSA, Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Rick Fancourt from Countrytell<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom today, people can connect to 60 of the City\u2019s 150 smart poles on their smart devices when they log on along Wharf Road, Watt Street and Shortland Esplanade. Plans are in the pipeline to install more poles across the City, as well as Beresfield and Wallsend, soon.<br \/>\nSpeaking at today\u2019s launch on Market Street Lawn, Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the roll-out would extend to the new CBD in the West End and parts of Wickham.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Wi-fimapinside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Free-Wi-Fi-now-live-across-the-City\/Wi-fimapinside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Wi-fimapinside.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cWhether it be for business or leisure, cities the world over are now embracing the ability to offer affordable and accessible internet to residents and visitors so that they can be connected anytime, anywhere,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is one of the many actions contained within our Smart City Strategy that we\u2019ve invested in, alongside energy-efficient solar projects, electric-vehicle charging stations, driverless vehicle technology and bike-sharing initiatives.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is the first step in our staged roll-out of free Wi-Fi, which will eventually see the whole City connected as well as Beresfield and Wallsend local centres. Today it\u2019s Newcastle East, but we\u2019re working hard to make sure our new CBD in the West End and areas around Wickham quickly follow. Plans are well and truly advanced for these areas and we hope to make more announcements soon.\u201d<br \/>\nThe free high-speed Wi-Fi will play a major role in supporting the roll-out of current and future technology, such as the City\u2019s smartphone app EasyPark, which will soon be able to direct motorists to available car parks in the City\u2019s CBD.<br \/>\nInteractive smart screens around the CBD are also planned to help visitors and residents find out about activities and events.<br \/>\nTo log on to the free Wi-Fi network, look for \u2018City of Newcastle free Wi-Fi\u2019 in your network settings.
