{"id":2965,"date":"2019-06-05T07:46:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T07:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=2965"},"modified":"2019-06-05T07:46:13","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T07:46:13","slug":"trees-and-tech-deployed-to-beatairpollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/06\/05\/trees-and-tech-deployed-to-beatairpollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Trees and tech deployed to #BeatAirPollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle celebrated a city-wide tree planting drive today and the upcoming installation of an environmental sensor network as part of World Environment Day\u2019s global campaign to combat air pollution.<br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0helped plant a Port Jackson Fig\u00a0in Centennial Park, Cooks Hill, this morning as\u00a0the City&#8217;s Environment\u00a0teams\u00a0continued their work\u00a0in driving rain to\u00a0minimise carbon pollution on World Environment Day 2019.<br \/>\nThe Fig will eventually grow to a height of 30 metres and is just one of 205 trees the City will plant before 23 June at parks and playgrounds in Cooks Hill, Broadmeadow, Wallsend and Shortland.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Figtreeplanting6inside_LM-(1).jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Trees-and-tech-deployed-to-BeatAirPollution\/Figtreeplanting6inside_LM-(1).jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Figtreeplanting6inside_LM-(1).jpg\" \/><strong>The Port Jackson Fig was winched into its new home via crane<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Figtreeplantinginside_LM.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Trees-and-tech-deployed-to-BeatAirPollution\/Figtreeplantinginside_LM.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Figtreeplantinginside_LM.jpg\" \/><strong>Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes helped in the planting efforts<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cOur City has never been more invested in local and global climate issues than we are right now,\u201d Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cToday\u2019s tree planting and the ongoing projects our environment and smart city teams are working on are practical efforts we\u2019re making following our commitment to the UN\u2019s Sustainable Goal Development goals, which we incorporated into our 2030 Community Strategic Plan last year.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile small in stature right now, this Port Jackson fig may absorb more than two tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over its lifetime whilst producing oxygen, aligning perfectly with the theme of World Environment Day today, which is #BeatAirPollution.\u201d<br \/>\nAlso harnessing the environmental benefits of technology, the City will soon deploy up to 40 clusters of Internet of Things sensors right across the local government area, providing a comprehensive analysis of environmental conditions in real-time, including particulate pollution, flooding, humidity and soil moisture.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Figtreeplantinginside4_LM.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Trees-and-tech-deployed-to-BeatAirPollution\/Figtreeplantinginside4_LM.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Figtreeplantinginside4_LM.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Figtreeplantinginside5_LM.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/Trees-and-tech-deployed-to-BeatAirPollution\/Figtreeplantinginside5_LM.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Figtreeplantinginside5_LM.jpg\" \/><strong>L-R City staff Angus Weingott, Michael Linsley and Matthew Warby with the Lord Mayor at Centennial Park<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Lord Mayor said the network had been designed to grow as new applications and challenges were identified, with data collected, communicated and aggregated on smart city technology platforms and made freely available to the public.<br \/>\n\u201cBy collecting real-time data on air quality and environmental conditions, City planners will be able to make more-informed decisions about the impacts of urban design decisions and better understand industrial processes,\u201d the Lord mayor said. \u201cResearchers can also use the data to inform projects to improve liveability and maintain urban amenity.\u201d<br \/>\nThe envirosensing network is a leading smart city application of the Hunter Innovation Project.
