City of Newcastle\u2019s great smart city strides were recognized again Thursday\u00a0night at a national event highlighting the latest technologies being deployed across Australia\u2019s building, transport and utilities industries.
\nNewcastle\u00a0was named joint winner of\u00a0the headline\u00a0Smart City of the Year \u2013 Metropolitan\u00a0prize\u00a0along with Adelaide\u2019s City of Prospect at the Smart Cities Awards 2019 in Melbourne.
\nPresented\u00a0during the\u00a0Smart Cities 2019\u00a0Conference,\u00a0the award\u00a0confirmed Newcastle had\u00a0moved ahead\u00a0of other local governments,\u00a0including\u00a0finalists Randwick, Townsville and Lake Macquarie city councils, as an advanced and ambitious smart city.
\n\"Nathaniel-Bavinton-with-Smart-City-awar-shrunkd.jpg\"\u201cThis award recognises our commitment to planning for the future and engaging widely with the Hunter\u2019s tech minds as part of the Smart City Strategy, adopted by Council in 2017, and the extent of our smart city development,\u201d\u00a0Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes\u00a0said.
\n\u201cWhether investing in energy-efficient solar projects or rolling out electric-vehicle charging stations and bike-sharing initiatives, we\u2019re leading the way when it comes to investment in and uptake of technology.
\n\u201cThis includes the roll-out of free Wi-Fi and low-power wide area networks that will link sensors and integrated technology to provide detailed real-time data to improve ease of access, efficiency and liveability for residents, businesses and tourists.
\n“It\u2019s also important to move beyond the installation of technology alone, to also engage with the community around the future city. This is what we\u2019ve seen with our catapult project working with innovative startups, and workshops and events aimed at ensuring our smart city is for everyone, such as the\u00a0inaugural Humble Lecture<\/a>being delivered\u00a0Friday at our City Library.
\n\u201cThis is an exciting time for our City, and I want to pay tribute and extend a big thank you to the great achievements of our Smart City team.\u201d
\nThe latest gong follows the City\u2019s win of last year\u2019s Smart Cities Strategy Award, which recognised the the\u00a0Smart City Strategy 2017-2021\u00a0<\/em>at the Smart Cities Council Australia and New Zealand\u2019s inaugural Smart City Week.
