{"id":28698,"date":"2024-08-26T02:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T02:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=28698"},"modified":"2024-08-26T02:00:32","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T02:00:32","slug":"labor-betrays-lgbtiqa-people-again-over-census-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/08\/26\/labor-betrays-lgbtiqa-people-again-over-census-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor betrays LGBTIQA+ people again over Census decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After years of promises and working groups, the Albanese Labor Government has quietly killed off the inclusion of questions on sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex characteristics in the upcoming 2026 Census.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The failure of the Census to appropriately consider LGBTIQA+ people in its design was so acute that the Australian Bureau of Statistics issued a rare&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/media-centre\/media-statements\/statement-regret-2021-census\"><u>Statement of Regret<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a year ago, apologising to the LGBTIQA+ community, Equality Australia and April Long for the exclusion of non-binary people from being counted as parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, the ABS set up an LGBTIQA+ expert advisory committee to ensure future Censuses used appropriate language and ensure LGBTIQA+ people are counted. A committee they have clearly ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex characteristics in the Census \u2014 alongside appropriate and inclusive language in the rest of the Census and safeguards against domestic and family violence an accidental outing might trigger \u2014 have long been demands of the LGBTIQA+ community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of clear data on the prevalence, experiences and economic circumstances of LGBTIQA+ people has stymied our community\u2019s demands for reform. It is impossible without appropriate Census questions for governments and support services to understand the health and wellbeing needs of LGBTIQA+ people \u2014 and the breadth of need and scale of funding necessary to address the compounding disadvantages LGBTIQA+ people face, particularly in rural and regional areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Stephen Bates MP tabled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/recognise-lgbtiqa-people-in-the-2026-census\"><u>a petition 5,000 signatures-strong from Evalyn Venture<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in Federal Parliament calling on the ABS to include these questions in the Census. Equality Australia has also run its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/equalityaustralia.org.au\/our-work\/countusin\/\"><u>CountUsIn campaign<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;with thousands of people Australia-wide signing up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Stephen Bates MP, Australian Greens LGBTIQA+ spokesperson<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, Anthony Albanese and Labor have \u2014 once again \u2014 betrayed the LGBTIQA+ community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClearly LGBTIQA+ rights don&#8217;t matter to Labor anymore. Labor has backpedalled and stalled on every reform that would improve the lives of queer people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor has failed to deliver protections for LGBTIQA+ teachers and students, Labor has failed to deliver the LGBTIQA+ health and wellbeing action plan, and now Labor\u2019s even failed at the bare minimum to count LGBTIQA+ appropriately in the Census.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is abundantly clear that Labor in Opposition and Labor in Government are two entirely different parties.
