{"id":27113,"date":"2024-06-07T07:49:10","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T07:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=27113"},"modified":"2024-06-07T07:49:10","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T07:49:10","slug":"greyhound-industry-regulator-to-review-wyee-rehoming-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/06\/07\/greyhound-industry-regulator-to-review-wyee-rehoming-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Greyhound industry regulator to review Wyee rehoming facility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Greyhound Welfare &amp; Integrity Commission (GWIC) will review allegations about various matters involving Greyhound Racing NSW\u2019s (GRNSW) Wyee rehoming facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allegations relate to the care of greyhounds at the facility, which was temporarily closed in May as part of changes made by the GRNSW board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GWIC will review allegations relating to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>greyhound accommodation at the Wyee facility<\/li><li>alleged injuries to greyhounds housed at the facility<\/li><li>the GRNSW management\u2019s response to animal welfare concerns raised by staff at the facility.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister for Gaming and Racing, the Hon David Harris MP, has requested GWIC to review the allegations and provide a report to the Minister in accordance with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.nsw.gov.au\/view\/pdf\/asmade\/act-2017-13\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">section 12(e) of the Greyhound Racing Act 2017<\/a>&nbsp;by 5 July 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GRNSW was established under the Act. Its statutory functions include registering greyhound racing clubs, developing safety standards for licensed racecourses, and managing greyhound adoption programs, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NSW Government and wider community need to have confidence that the industry is being run with the highest standards of animal welfare, integrity and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile GRNSW is not a government organisation, with its CEO and Board responsible for its operation, I\u2019ve received information relating to Wyee and the welfare of greyhounds under its care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese allegations require further review, as they have the potential to undermine public trust and integrity in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the industry\u2019s regulator, GWIC is best placed to look into these matters and report back to me to inform my consideration of any appropriate next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Greyhound Welfare &amp; Integrity Commission (GWIC) will review allegations about various matters involving Greyhound Racing NSW\u2019s (GRNSW) Wyee rehoming facility.
