{"id":26716,"date":"2024-05-17T03:06:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T03:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=26716"},"modified":"2024-05-17T03:06:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T03:06:17","slug":"womens-asian-cup-heads-to-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/05\/17\/womens-asian-cup-heads-to-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s Asian Cup heads to Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In another major boost for women\u2019s sport, Australia will host the next Women\u2019s Asian Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced Australia as host nation for the AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It follows Australia\u2019s successful hosting of the FIFA Women\u2019s Football World Cup last year and will again bring the world\u2019s best female football talent to our shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosting major sporting events, like the Women\u2019s Asian Cup, boosts local tourism, trade, employment and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also helps grow participation and inclusion in sport at the local, regional and national levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Matildas are still riding the wave of success from last year\u2019s Women\u2019s World Cup where they captured the hearts of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A record 14 straight sold-out Matildas matches in Australia demonstrates the endurance of the \u2018Matildas effect\u2019 and our love of women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup is the oldest women\u2019s international football competition in the world, and will help continue to grow women\u2019s football in Australia and our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cHosting the Women\u2019s Asian Cup brings the region to Australia, and creates an opportunity to present modern Australia to millions of sports fans in Asia.<\/p><p>\u201cFollowing the success of the FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup 2023, the AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup 2026 will see sport bring us together again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Women, Katy Gallagher:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAustralia is thrilled to be hosting the Asian Football Confederation Women\u2019s Asian Cup 2026.<\/p><p>\u201cThis is a golden opportunity for us to showcase the continued growth and popularity of women\u2019s sport in this country, and supports the Government\u2019s commitment to gender equality.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Sport, Anika Wells:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to be part of a government that is increasing the visibility of women\u2019s sport and creating greater opportunities for women and girls in sport.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Women&#8217;s World Cup ended all debates about the place of female athletes in sport and now we can continue to celebrate the Matildas in the Women\u2019s Asian Cup.<\/p><p>\u201cWomen&#8217;s sport is not a phase, is not a nice to have, it is thrilling, it is brilliant and it is here to stay.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In another major boost for women\u2019s sport, Australia will host the next Women\u2019s Asian Cup.
