{"id":26622,"date":"2024-05-14T03:32:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T03:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=26622"},"modified":"2024-05-14T03:32:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T03:32:41","slug":"parliamentary-inquiry-into-full-voter-turnout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/05\/14\/parliamentary-inquiry-into-full-voter-turnout\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliamentary inquiry into full voter turnout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Almost 800,000 people in NSW did not see their vote count in the 2023 NSW election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost 800,000 people in NSW did not see their vote count in the 2023 NSW election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSW Government has asked parliament to conduct an inquiry into potential reforms to support the target of 100% participation in NSW elections in future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bipartisan Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters has been asked to report on electoral laws and practices that would support the following targets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>100% enrolment<\/li><li>100% turnout<\/li><li>100% formal voting<\/li><li>100% voter confidence.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Special Minister of State John Graham has asked the committee to consider potential reforms that would strengthen the integrity and confidence in the electoral system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cdemocratic gap\u201d of people who are entitled to vote but whose vote did not count totalled 791,759 people at the March 2023 NSW election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is made up of 74,677 people who are eligible but not enrolled, 553,646 who are enrolled but did not cast a vote, and 163,436 people who cast an informal vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Special Minister of State John Graham said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery vote is precious, and it is both alarming and disappointing that almost 800,000 votes did not count at last year\u2019s NSW election. Closing this democratic gap is important for the future of our electoral system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnless we tackle this problem, our political system will be less representative and less responsive than it should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NSW Government makes no apologies for setting the most ambitious targets of 100% voter enrolment, 100% turnout to vote and 100% votes being cast formally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNSW elections must be inclusive, accessible and secure, and if we need to make reforms to the process to ensure that remains the case, that\u2019s exactly what we will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaintaining voter confidence is paramount to a robust democracy. Unfortunately, public confidence can be eroded due to real or perceived weaknesses in the system \u2013 and that\u2019s what those behind misinformation and disinformation campaigns seek to exploit.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost 800,000 people in NSW did not see their vote count in the 2023 NSW election.
