{"id":2639,"date":"2019-05-03T17:44:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T17:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2019-05-03T17:44:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T17:44:00","slug":"labor-will-support-people-in-financial-hardship-in-newcastle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/05\/03\/labor-will-support-people-in-financial-hardship-in-newcastle\/","title":{"rendered":"LABOR WILL SUPPORT PEOPLE IN FINANCIAL HARDSHIP IN NEWCASTLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Shorten\u00a0Labor\u00a0Government will provide $40 million over four years to emergency relief organisations across the country, including over half a million dollars for organisations in Newcastle.<br \/>\nThis election is a choice between a Shorten\u00a0Labor\u00a0Government supporting people doing it tough, or bigger tax loopholes for the top end of town under the Liberals.<br \/>\nThe Morrison Government is cutting the funding for many emergency relief services at the end of the year.<br \/>\nLabor\u00a0will reverse these cuts and provide a much-needed funding boost to the sector.<br \/>\nIn Newcastle this will mean\u202fLabor\u202fwill deliver an extra\u00a0$491,000 to the Samaritans Foundation for emergency relief services over the next four years.<br \/>\nLabor\u00a0will also restore the $73,000 that the Liberals cut from emergency relief funding for\u00a0Muloobinba\u00a0Aboriginal Corporation.<br \/>\nWithout this funding\u00a0Muloobinba\u00a0Aboriginal Corporation will no longer be able to provide emergency relief to First Nations families in need.<br \/>\nThese services provide support to vulnerable people who have nowhere else to turn by providing food hampers, funding for fuel to attend specialist medical appointments and other financial assistance.<br \/>\nThe charities and not-for-profits that do this important work are increasingly stretched and need more resources.<br \/>\nA Shorten\u202fLabor\u202fGovernment will\u202falso\u202fsupport Australians in financial hardship by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doubling the number of financial counsellors across the country.<\/li>\n<li>Expanding low-cost alternatives to pay day loans for low-income Australians, providing safe and fair credit options when things get tough.<\/li>\n<li>Reversing the Morrison Government\u2019s $5.5 million cut to emergency relief organisations across the country and providing a\u202fmuch-needed\u202ftop up to the emergency relief sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many\u202fvulnerable\u202fAustralians are falling through the cracks.\u202fLabor\u202fwill make sure our charities\u202fand not-for-profits\u202fhave the resources they need to support our fellow Australians.<br \/>\n<strong>FEDERAL MEMBER FOR NEWCASTLE<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>SHARON CLAYDON SAID:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cI have met too many families in our community who are in crisis and in need of a helping hand.
