{"id":26354,"date":"2024-04-30T07:29:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T07:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=26354"},"modified":"2024-04-30T07:29:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T07:29:56","slug":"sydney-childrens-hospital-randwicks-new-building-and-cancer-research-centre-reaches-highest-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/04\/30\/sydney-childrens-hospital-randwicks-new-building-and-cancer-research-centre-reaches-highest-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Sydney Children&#8217;s Hospital, Randwick&#8217;s new building and cancer research centre reaches highest point"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The $658 million Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre has reached a major milestone, with construction of the new 12-storey building reaching its highest point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal Minister for Health Mark Butler today joined NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park, Federal Member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite and Member for Coogee Dr Marjorie O\u2019Neill for a traditional \u2018topping out\u2019 ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honouring a long-held construction tradition, a Native Water Gum tree, which is native to the area, was lifted onto the roof of the new building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is on track for completion in late 2025 and will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a new and enhanced children\u2019s intensive care unit<\/li><li>a new and larger children&#8217;s emergency department &nbsp;<\/li><li>a new medical short stay unit<\/li><li>a new neurosciences centre<\/li><li>a new virtual care centre and hospital command centre &#8211; KidsHQ<\/li><li>inpatient units for medical, surgical and sleep studies<\/li><li>a day oncology centre and inpatient units, along with a dedicated bone marrow transplant unit<\/li><li>co-located laboratories to support the Minderoo Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre\u2019s research, education and training<\/li><li>a new children\u2019s hospital pharmacy<\/li><li>improved parent amenities, including an Aboriginal Gathering Space and overnight and oncology bereavement rooms &nbsp;<\/li><li>education and training spaces.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The $658 million project is part of a $1.5 billion investment in health as part of the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minderoo Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre will include advanced laboratory spaces and deliver integrated, specialist cancer treatment, education and research, aiming to transform childhood cancer treatment and become one of the world\u2019s leading paediatric cancer centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSW and Federal Governments have partnered with Children\u2019s Cancer Institute, Sydney Children\u2019s Hospitals Network including the Kids Cancer Centre, and UNSW Sydney to plan and deliver Australia\u2019s first Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre within the new children\u2019s hospital and university buildings on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philanthropic contributions have also been provided from Sydney Children\u2019s Hospitals Foundation, Minderoo Foundation and Children\u2019s Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is being delivered by Health Infrastructure, with John Holland as the principal contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information visit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.randwickcampusredevelopment.health.nsw.gov.au\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Randwick Campus Redevelopment &#8211; NSW Health website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Federal Minister for Health Mark Butler said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis exciting milestone is another step towards delivering a state-of-the-art health facility which will transform paediatric care for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce complete, the new health facility will be world-class, bringing together leading clinicians, researchers and educators under the one roof.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is about significantly improving health outcomes for kids and their families, by offering them the highest level of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project will deliver a new children\u2019s emergency department, emergency short-stay unit, and ICU and a new paediatric virtual care centre which will provide care to patients across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has been extensive consultation to develop this new building with over 1000 people involved, to ensure we deliver a space which feels like home to families facing their toughest times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Federal Member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the project reaching its highest point now, our community has a better idea of just what will be on offer when the new hospital is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis redevelopment of Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital has created more than a thousand jobs, which is a really welcome boost to our local economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Member for Coogee Marjorie O\u2019Neill said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very proud of this major investment in paediatric healthcare for our community here in Randwick and in surrounding areas, which is now coming to fruition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are extraordinarily talented and committed healthcare staff who work here, so it\u2019s terrific that they will have these state of the art facilities to provide great care to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The $658 million Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children\u2019s Comprehensive Cancer Centre has reached a major milestone, with construction of the new 12-storey building reaching its highest point.
