{"id":26045,"date":"2024-04-08T07:14:19","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T07:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=26045"},"modified":"2024-04-08T07:14:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T07:14:19","slug":"gas-pipeline-rupture-at-ageing-rig-exposes-need-for-stronger-regulation-of-offshore-fossil-fuel-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/04\/08\/gas-pipeline-rupture-at-ageing-rig-exposes-need-for-stronger-regulation-of-offshore-fossil-fuel-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"GAS PIPELINE RUPTURE AT AGEING RIG EXPOSES NEED FOR STRONGER REGULATION OF OFFSHORE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Greens have today raised concerns about NOPSEMA\u2019s regulation of the offshore fossil fuel industry following a pipeline rupture at an ageing gas rig off the Victorian coast, causing pollution visible on the ocean\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pipeline linking two Esso\/ExxonMobil platforms is being investigated by NOPSEMA as the source of a suspected hydrocarbon spill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esso is currently applying to use the Gippsland Basin for sea dumping carbon capture and storage (CCS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens spokesperson for healthy oceans, Peter Whish-Wilson:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia desperately needs stronger laws and regulations to govern the offshore fossil fuel industry. The current regulatory framework doesn\u2019t provide sufficient environmental or economic protection from impacts of the offshore oil and gas sector \u2013 including impacts relating to the decommissioning of ageing and toxic offshore oil and gas rigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNOPSEMA is supposed to have oversight and regulate the environmental management of the offshore fossil fuel industry, but coastal communities are fast losing confidence in the \u2018independent\u2019 regulator, which has become more of an enabler than an investigator of offshore oil and gas projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig fossil fuel corporations make millions from Australia\u2019s offshore oil and gas fields and repeatedly get away with failing to clean up after themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Esso cannot manage to decommission rig infrastructure safely I highly doubt it\u2019s capable of carrying out risky carbon capture and storage it has planned for the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese corporations simply cannot be trusted and are only concerned with their bottom line \u2013 they will always try to cut costs at the expense of the environment and the taxpayer who is left to clean up their mess, so it\u2019s critical that NOPSEMA\u2019s investigation into the Esso\/ExxonMobil pipeline rupture is carried out with the utmost transparency.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Greens have today raised concerns about NOPSEMA\u2019s regulation of the offshore fossil fuel industry following a pipeline rupture at an ageing gas rig off the Victorian coast, causing pollution visible on the ocean\u2019s surface.
