{"id":2602,"date":"2019-05-01T16:10:22","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T16:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=2602"},"modified":"2019-05-01T16:10:22","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T16:10:22","slug":"city-opens-500k-funding-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/05\/01\/city-opens-500k-funding-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"City opens $500k funding programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has opened this year\u2019s grants and sponsorship funding round worth half a million dollars to support events and initiatives such as Newcastle\u2019s first homegrown comedy festival.<br \/>\nAs the opening night of the four-day Newcastle Comedy festival nears, the City invites community groups keen to stage events in the next financial year to apply for $280,000 in funding under its Event Sponsorship Program (ESP).<br \/>\nThe inaugural rib tickler was awarded more than $15,000 under last year\u2019s ESP to deliver a barrel of laughs at Civic Theatre, pubs and live venues across the City from Thursday 23 May.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Comedyfestpicinside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-opens-$500k-funding-programs\/Comedyfestpicinside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Comedyfestpicinside.jpg\" \/><strong>Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes with Newcastle Comedy Festival crew (bottom left) Chris Wedlock,<br \/>\n(top left) Andrew Milos, (top right) Alan Parry and (bottom right) Grant Gibbons<\/strong><br \/>\nFestival director Andrew Milos, of the aptly named Big Dog Pod, said the funding was crucial to getting a locally produced event off the ground.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m really glad we\u2019ve got the backing behind us to do this because if I didn\u2019t do it then someone from Sydney would have,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s helped give us some breathing room to secure local comedy acts, such as Raw finalist Cameron James, and we\u2019ve been able to approach second year sound engineering students from Newcastle University to help us out.<br \/>\nThe ESP, applications for which are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Community\/Grants-Sponsorships\/Events-Sponsorship\">now open,<\/a>\u00a0provides funding for Community Events, Major Community Events, Major Destination Events, Commercial Events and Business Events. More than 35 events were sponsored under last year\u2019s program, extending from local community based festivals through to international competitions such as the Port to Port Mountain Bike event.<br \/>\nThe ESP will be followed by another $210,000 worth of grant funding through Economic Development ($70,000) Community ($60,000) and Recreational Facilities ($80,000) grant programs over the next few months.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2701_CamJames_Studio11782_editinside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-opens-$500k-funding-programs\/2701_CamJames_Studio11782_editinside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"2701_CamJames_Studio11782_editinside.jpg\" \/><strong>Triple J Raw Comedy finalist Cameron James will be a local hit at the upcoming comedy festival<\/strong><br \/>\nLord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the grants open the door for new\u00a0ventures and groups\u00a0to provide a welcome\u00a0community\u00a0contribution, or for\u00a0existing organisations\u00a0to\u00a0build on their previous success.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s the aim of\u00a0the grant funding\u00a0to support local talent and community groups as they evolve into successful organisations delivering\u00a0outcomes\u00a0year-in, year-out,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<br \/>\n&#8220;Last year&#8217;s funding across our range of sponsorship and grant programs has contributed to projects with a direct expenditure of $1.25 million and provided support for business growth and employment while encouraging innovation, community capacity building, placemaking and developing the visitor economy.<br \/>\n\u201cI know in speaking with the organisers of the Newcastle Comedy Festival that they have big plans to grow the local comedy scene so it\u2019s very important that we help them.\u201d<br \/>\nFore more information on the City\u2019s sponsorship grants, visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Community\/Grants-Sponsorships\">http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Community\/Grants-Sponsorships<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City of Newcastle has opened this year\u2019s grants and sponsorship funding round worth half a million dollars to support events and initiatives such as Newcastle\u2019s first homegrown comedy festival.
