{"id":24926,"date":"2024-01-25T10:48:30","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T10:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=24926"},"modified":"2024-01-25T10:48:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T10:48:30","slug":"redirect-fossil-fuel-subsidies-to-accelerate-community-led-energy-transition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/01\/25\/redirect-fossil-fuel-subsidies-to-accelerate-community-led-energy-transition\/","title":{"rendered":"REDIRECT FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES TO ACCELERATE COMMUNITY-LED ENERGY TRANSITION"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Greens say $11 billion in annual federal subsidies to polluting fossil fuel companies should be phased out and the money redirected to accelerating a community-led transition to renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With yesterday\u2019s news that Rio Tinto\u2019s deal to purchase all energy produced by the Upper Calliope Solar Farm would only deliver one quarter of the wind and solar energy it needs to power its Gladstone alumina and aluminum operations, it\u2019s clear that the federal government needs to urgently ramp up investments in renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greens support calls from industry, business, unions and climate and energy organisations for renewable energy and electrification investment of at least $100 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gladstone-based Greens spokesperson on Industry, Transition and Regional Development Senator Penny Allman-Payne said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Cyclone Kirrily bearing down on the Queensland coast it\u2019s another harsh reminder of the cost of our coal and gas obsession and the urgent need to transition to an economy powered by clean, cheap renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia can become a renewable superpower, but if we don\u2019t act soon to transition our industries away from dirty fossil fuels, we risk getting left behind as the rest of the world moves on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Inflation Reduction Act in the US shows what\u2019s possible when a country seeks to let loose investment in clean energy. But Labor continues to back more gas \u2013 a dirty, polluting industry of the past that is fuelling the climate crisis and will leave workers stranded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t leave climate action up to the same unchecked market forces that have caused the climate crisis in the first place. That\u2019s why the energy transition needs to be driven by public investment, community- and government-led, with full, transparent and timely engagement, including the free, prior and informed consent of Traditional Owners, and protections for workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe people of my home of Gladstone know all too well what happens when we let massive corporations drive decision-making.
