{"id":24298,"date":"2023-11-30T08:18:49","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T08:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=24298"},"modified":"2023-11-30T08:18:49","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T08:18:49","slug":"crimes-act-93z","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/11\/30\/crimes-act-93z\/","title":{"rendered":"Crimes Act 93Z"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Opposition supports, and remains willing to support, legislation that would allow NSW Police powers of prosecution for publicly threatening or inciting violence on grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex or HIV\/AIDS status, and moved an amendment to allow this, which the government voted down.<br>\u00a0<br>We don\u2019t support allowing citizens to bring private prosecutions, which would have been permitted under the Government\u2019s proposed amendment. We therefore opposed the legislation in the Parliament.<br>\u00a0<br>Our intention was always to support a law that would enhance community harmony and ensure that people don\u2019t feel fearful in their own community.<br>\u00a0<br>The Government\u2019s poorly drafted legislation risks weaponising the provision in the hands of people trying to shut down free speech.
