{"id":23706,"date":"2023-10-29T10:11:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T10:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=23706"},"modified":"2023-10-29T10:11:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-29T10:11:33","slug":"next-steps-to-beat-plastic-pollution-in-nsw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/10\/29\/next-steps-to-beat-plastic-pollution-in-nsw\/","title":{"rendered":"Next steps to beat plastic pollution in NSW"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NSW Government is ramping up efforts to tackle plastic pollution by inviting the public to have its say on helping to prevent 800,000 tonnes of plastic waste produced each year from causing harm to the environment and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry, businesses and the community are encouraged to share their feedback on the \u2018NSW Plastics: Next Steps\u2019 discussion paper as we move to reduce plastic litter by 30% by 2025, curb the impact of microplastics and align with other states and territories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastics are an important part of many products we rely on, but not all plastics are essential. Often, they are produced in unsustainable ways to be used only once and then discarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 12% of plastic waste is recycled and once thrown away, these products don\u2019t disappear. Instead, they pollute the environment, harm wildlife, pose a risk to human health and contribute to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018NSW Plastics: Next Steps\u2019 identifies and addresses items and materials that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>are frequently littered or release microplastics into the environment<\/li><li>contain harmful chemical additives<\/li><li>are regulated or proposed to be in other states and territories.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Items containing plastic such as lollipop sticks, cigarette butts, bread tags and heavyweight plastic shopping bags are some of the problematic products that could be redesigned or phased out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultation is open for 14 weeks from 29 October 2023 to 4 February 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To participate in the future of plastics, visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.nsw.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSW Environment Protection Authoritylaunch<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All feedback will inform further actions to tackle problematic and unnecessary plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe said:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy 2050 there may be more plastic than fish by weight in the world\u2019s oceans. Plastic has become so widespread that we are constantly eating, drinking and breathing it in. NSW alone generates 800,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year and only 12% of it is recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must act.
